Last second shot lifts Humboldt boys past Algona in thriller, 71-69

Caden Matson’s jump shot with one second left in the game lifted the Humboldt boys basketball team to a thrilling 71-69 victory over the Algona Bulldogs Thursday night (Feb. 25) in a Class 3A substate contest in Algona.

The triumph sends Humboldt into a substate final on Tuesday, March 2, against Clear Lake in Algona. Clear Lake defeated Spencer, 58-55 in a semifinal in Clear Lake.

Humboldt and Algona split during the regular season with Humboldt losing 61-58 at Algona on Dec. 15 and winning 60-48 at home on Jan. 26.

Will Orness scored 19 points to lead Humboldt. Gabe Gidel followed with 17. Sam Fischer made 15 and Matson had 14. Noah Nelson poured in 38 to lead Algona.
