Work has begun on creating a documentary on Humboldt’s legendary World Wrestling champion Frank Gotch.
Mike Chapman of Newton, a well-known wrestling historian who has authored several books about Gotch, was in Humboldt on Monday, April 12, along with wrestler/actor Curran Jacobs, and videographer DJ Perry of Collective Development Incorporated.
They shot video footage of the farm south of town where Gotch grew up in the late 1800s, the Gotch family mausoleum, along with footage inside the home in the 100 block of 6th Street North in Humboldt, where Gotch passed away of kidney failure at the age of 39 in 1917.
They also took time to visit the Gotch statue located at Bicknell Park in Humboldt, famous training site for Gotch in the early 1900s.
“I’ve traveled to Iowa with this man to be able to tell the history of this amazing sport and it gets me excited,” Jacobs said. “I’ve talked to DJ Perry, owner of Collective Development Incorporated, who is a filmmaker and friend of mine. He is on board and we got funding for this project and so here we are today.”
