Humboldt's Clark receives musical theater honor

Humboldt’s Elle Clark made her second performance in the musical “Annie,” last month. She was just under age 6 when the play was performed at Humboldt High School in 2010. She had the lead role in last month’s production and was recognized by adjudicators as having an Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role, an honor of the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards. She will perform at the Iowa Civic Center next week. Humboldt Independent photo.

In a role she was meant to play, Humboldt sophomore Elle Clark became “Annie” for the recent school musical, but what came after was totally unexpected.
Humboldt vocal music instructor and musical play director Bryce Shutt was familiar with the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards. The relatively new honor (established in 2012-13) recognizes outstanding performances in musical theater.
While Humboldt was just a participating school last year, Clark’s role of Little Orphan Annie in this year’s production wowed the judges in the audience enough that she received the honor of Oustanding Performance in a Principal Role.
Clark will be part of a select group of high school musical theater students who will be performing Wednesday, June 2, on the Civic Center stage in Des Moines.
The award is on the level of an all-state performance in music, sports or speech. Read more about the honor in this week's Humboldt Independent.
