The Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) Board of Trustees has agreed to move forward with plans for a new mental health therapy and counseling center on the hospital campus.
The Board approved the concept following a closed session at its October meeting and on Wednesday, Nov. 24, the Board ratified the idea by selecting a design architect for the project.
The 3,000-square foot addition is expected to provide four provider offices, three counseling rooms, two play therapy spaces, two exam rooms and one nursing space area in addition to waiting room, reception space and a restroom. There will be a private entrance and exits to the new building. The cost of design, engineering and construction is expected to be $1 million, HCMH Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michelle Sleiter told the Board in a PowerPoint presentation.
The new center would be connected to the northwest side of the hospital in the grassy area between Springvale Independent and Assisted Living.
“The demand for therapy and counseling services continues to grow," Sleiter said. An architect from Clear Lake was hired at the Board's meeting last Wednesday. Construction is expected to take 6-9 months.
