Malo, Thumma lead HHS runners at Webster City

A pair of freshman runners led the Humboldt High cross country team in their meet at the Webster City Lynx Invitational on Monday, Aug. 29.

Brynn Malo finished 19th overall in 22:27 to pace the Humboldt girls to a seventh-place finish in the team scoring. Meg Zweibohmer ran 27th in 23:31 and Alana Malo was 35th in 24:35 to lead the Wildcats.

Gabe Thumma ran 42nd in 19:54 to lead the Wildcat boys to 12th-place. Hayden Hansen ran 65th in 21:05 and Daylin McDaniel 67th in 21:08. Jayden Gargano was 74th in 21:27.

Ballard Huxley (26) edged North Polk (28) for the girls team title. Paitlyn Noe of Ballard was the overall winner for the girls with a meet-record time of 17:23.60. She shattered the old record set by Humboldt's Bryce Gidel in 2019.

North Polk (46) won the boys crown. Algona (51) was runner-up. North Polk claimed the first five runners individually, led by Zach Spore in 15:58.

Next action for Humboldt is the Estherville-LC Invitational on Sept. 6.
