Animal shelter group announces progress

Imagine being outside and exposed to the elements all day on a day like this past Monday, Jan. 21. That’s the status for dogs taken to the current city pound south of Humboldt. A local group is trying to raise funds for a new animal shelter for the county. Humboldt Independent file photo.

The purpose of the Humboldt County Animal Control Office is to enforce laws regarding animal control and provide for the temporary housing and care of homeless animals.
In 2012, newly appointed animal control officer Chad Lakin oversaw the housing and care of approximately 200 dogs and cats.
Sadly, Humboldt County lacks an adequate facility to temporarily house these animals. Dogs are placed in an outdoor kennel, and cats are housed in a garage. Neither structure provide adequate protection from the elements, nor meets the basic quality of life standards.
“We don’t have an animal shelter as such, and the ‘pound’ exists in name only,” Lakin said.
Concerted efforts by Lakin and other volunteers have been active during the past year to build an animal shelter for the entire county.
The group is collecting funds and organizing as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit. Find out more about the Humboldt County Animal Shelter on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/humboldtcountyanimalshelter.
