HHS wrestlers stay perfect with key double dual sweep over Lions, Lynx - Place 3rd at Ames Invite
HUMBOLDT - Humboldt took sole possession of the North Central Conference wrestling dual standings here Thursday night (Jan. 3) by turning back Clear Lake (34-25) and Webster City (38-24). The sweep moved the No. 7 ranked Wildcats (2A) to 5-0 in the NCC, 14-0 overall on the season.
Webster City, which slipped to 5-1 in the league, also defeated Clear Lake (3-3). Against Clear Lake, Humboldt got victories from Kylie Zender (10-7) at 113, Jake Miller (2-0) at 126, Nick Madsen (6-1) at 132, Tyler Rutz (2:40 pin) at 152, Colton Schnetzer (13-3) at 160, Reed Dreyer 1:40 pin) at 195, Cordes Olthoff (4:50 pin) at 220 and Dylan Hendricks (3-0) at 285.
Earning wins for HHS against Webster City was Zender (12-3) at 113, Austen Gargano (0:42 pin) at 120, Miller (2:57 pin) at 126, Madsen (2:51 pin) at 132, Rutz (10-1) at 152, Dreyer (3:04 pin) at 195 and Levi Sawyer (3:46 pin) at 106.
WILDCATS 3RD AT AMES INVITE
AMES - Humboldt placed third in the team scoring of the power-laden Jack Mendenhall Invitational in Ames on Saturday(Jan. 5).
The Wildcats finished behind Class 3A powers Cedar Rapids Prairie and West Des Moines Dowling. Wildcat No. 2 ranked junior 195-pounder Reed Dreyer won his division and improved his record to 24-0 while Nikko Wheeler was third at 182. Placing fourth was Austen Gargano at 120, Colton Schnetzer at 160 and Adam Mickelson at 170.
Other HHS finishes include Kylie Zender, who was fifth at 113, along with Jacob Miller at 126, Tyler Rutz at 152 and Dylan Hendricks at 285. Placing eighth was Levi Sawyer at 106 and Cordes Olthoff at 220. Mike Madsen (132), Thaylan Bowman (138) and Adam Powell (145) did not place.
