Humboldt Community Chorus history features Harklaus
The annual Humboldt Community Chorus show will be presented Feb. 1 through Feb. 3, at the R. Wesley Carlson Auditorium. Tickets are available from chorus members and The Bootery on Sumner Avenue downtown. One of the chorus members, Judy Harklau, has sung in 44 shows, most of those years with her husband, Dean, who died of cancer in 2010.
Being scrapbook oriented, she has filled three books with pictures, programs and other memorabilia tracing the history of a local singing chorus that dates as far back as 1929.
Dean and Judy Harklau sang together in high school, then married and moved to Humboldt in 1965. In the spring of 1967, Dean sang in a cantata sung by the Community Chorus at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and directed by Jack Dodgen. They were both encouraged by the Dodgens to join the Community Chorus that fall for the show, “Moments To Remember,” put together by Mavis Moklestad and Marilyn Dodgen and directed by Gerald Christensen.
To read more about Judy's experiences and the names and faces who have made up the community chorus over the years, read Marilyn Dodgen's full article in this week's Humboldt Independent.
