The accolades accorded one William T. “Bill” Smith of Bode could fill several pages of sports journals and would make quite an impressive trophy display, but the one being bestowed upon him this week is special.
From a collegiate and international standpoint, being honored at his alma mater in the gym where he trained 65 years ago will be a special moment.
For the undefeated NCAA two-time champ and Olympic gold medalist, it’s where it all began.
This Friday night, the 84-year-old Smith will be honored as the United States oldest living Olympic wrestling gold medalist and the only gold medalist in the history of University of Northern Iowa.
