Veterans memorial wanted for bridge overlook

A military veteran and local pastor on the current Sumner Avenue Bridge. When the new bridge is constructed next year, Councilman Joe Hadar would like to see a small memorial for veterans and the possible renaming of the bridge as Humboldt Veterans Memorial Bridge. Humboldt Independent file photo.

The city of Humboldt may be getting a new veterans memorial following action by the Humboldt City Council Monday night.
Council member Joe Hadar said he thought about the scenic overlook semi-circle off the bridge that was discussed at the last meeting.
“It wasn’t a big cost at $5,000. After talking with some people in the community, there was a lot of support for a small area to memorialize our veterans in that spot,” Hadar said.
The overlook would be on the north side of the bridge, overlooking the Des Moines River and Bicknell Park.
“We’d like to have some sort of inscription (in the concrete) of the overlook and a plaque honoring all the veterans in Humboldt County.
“We’d like to have a lighted flag pole on it. Our idea is that it would work well with our plans for the bridge with only the footlights along the sidewalk portion," Hadar said.
