Wildcat boys blank Storm Lake in finale, 5-0
The Humboldt High baseball team closed out their regular season Monday night (July 14) by shutting out Storm Lake, 5-0 in a non-conference game in Storm Lake. Humboldt, 21-6 overall, will meet Ballard Huxley in a Class 3A first round district tournament game in Clear Lake on Friday, July 18, 5 p.m.
Humboldt traveled to Clear Lake Friday night (July 11) and dropped a 4-2 conference game to league foe Clear Lake. HHS, which finished with eight hits, was led at bat by Austin Zylstra who was 2-for-2 and Connor Vitzthum who was 2-for-4. Vitzthum took the loss on the mound pitching, allowing three hits in five innings. Humboldt slipped to 12-5 in the NCC
Humboldt forged out to a 9-0 lead and held off a Fort Dodge St. Edmond rally to earn a 9-6 North Central Conference victory over the Gaels Wednesday night (July 9) in Humboldt.
Humboldt got back on the winning track July 7th at home by sweeping the Webster City Lynx by scores of 7-6 and 10-1. The first game was a continuation of their June 21 game postponed due to weather.
Algona edged Humboldt, 4-3 in another close, North Central Conference baseball game Thursday night (July 3) in Algona. The Wildcats opened with a 3-0 lead before the host Bulldogs tied it up 3-3 after six innings.
Humboldt handled Clarion-Goldfield by a 12-2 count Wednesday night (July 2) in Humboldt. Connor Vitzthum's triple to right-centerfield scored Austin Saathoff in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game early via the 10-run rule. Chris Witzke earned the win pitching for the Wildcats with nine strikeouts. Humboldt slugged 13 hits at the plate.
Humboldt clubbed 12 hits and Austin Zylstra and Brenden Schnell combined to pitch a 2-hitter in leading the Wildcat varsity baseball team to a 10-0 shutout victory over North Union on July 1 in Humboldt. Chris Witzke and Connor Vitzthum each had three hits at bat for the Wildcats, who scored three runs in each of the first and third innings and added four in the fourth.
