Humboldt's varsity wrestlers placed eight in the Ames Mendenhall Invitational held on Saturday, Jan. 11 in the Ames High gym.
Humboldt senior Reed Dreyer was second at 195 pounds and senior Nikko Wheeler placed third at 170. Senior heavyweight Dylan Hendricks took fourth at 285 while Levi Sawyer was fifth at 106 and Adam Mickelson fifth at 182. Mike Madsen was sixth at 138 pounds while Thaylan Bowman was eighth at 152. Other Wildcats who competed but didn't place include Collin Flick at 145, Jaxon Kampen at 132, Cordes Olthoff at 220, Austin Meier at 113, Gus Arnold at 160, Austen Gargano at 126 and Jaden Kampen at 120.
Dreyer reached the finals where he lost by fall in the second period to Webster City's Dylan Fielder in 2:34 after taking a 2-0 lead early in the first period. Wheeler pinned Webster City's Connor Larson in their consolation final bout at 170.
There were 20 schools from across the state taking part in the tournament with 55 ranked wrestlers and two schools from Kansas.
Humboldt returns to action at Fort Dodge St. Edmond on Thursday, Jan. 16. They'll compete in the Lake Mills Invitational on Jan. 18. The North Central Conference tournament is Jan. 25 in Fort Dodge.
