Humboldt won the team title in a Class 2A Sectional wrestling tournament at Cherokee on Saturday (Feb. 2) and advanced nine wrestlers into the Feb. 9 district meet at Spencer.
The Wildcats totaled 248 first-place points to top runner-up Spencer (238.5). Estherville-Lincoln Central was third with 148, followed by Sioux City Bishop Heelan with 138, Cherokee at 114 and Laurens-Marathon-Sioux Central at 102.
Humboldt's sectional title winners include junior Thaylan Bowman (18-13) at 138, senior Tyler Rutz (35-10) at 152 and junior 182-pounder Nikko Wheeler (35-8). Runner-up finishers include senior Kylie Zender (33-9) at 113, sophomore Austen Gargano (25-13) at 120, senior Colton Schnetzer (32-6) at 160, sophomore Adam Mickelson (26-16) at 170, junior Reed Dreyer (33-2) at 195 and junior Dylan Hendricks (33-11) at 285.
Humboldt's high finish moved the Wildcats into a regional dual at home on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The No. 6 ranked Wildcats will meet Woodward-Granger in the first match while Ballard Huxley will face Greene County in the other match. The winners will meet in the regional final with the survivor advancing to the state dual team tournament in Des Moines Feb. 13. See the Independent for complete story and photos.
