DES MOINES - Nikko Wheeler and Reed Dreyer came away with sixth-place medals while Dylan Hendricks placed eighth in Saturday's consolation finals of the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. All three are juniors for the Wildcats, who sent five wrestlers down to state two days earlier.
Wheeler lost two matches on Saturday at 182 pounds. He lost by fall in 3:51 to Jay Reisetter of East Marshall, then lost a fifth-place bout to Colton Spauer of Knoxville by fall in 2:44. Dreyer lost a pair of matches at 195 pounds on Saturday as well, falling 4-3 on a late reversal by Ballard's Alex Macki, then a 9-7 overtime decision to Lance Evans of Solon. Hendricks, at 285 pounds, wrestled once on Saturday, falling 3-1 to Mario Pena of Hampton-Dumont.
FRIDAY EVENING RESULTS AT STATE
Wheeler's bid for a state championship came up short Friday night (Feb. 15) in the 182-pound semifinal round of the state tournament. Wheeler was pinned by Mediapolis' Steven Holloway in 2:41. The loss dropped Wheeler, 40-10, into the consolation finals on Saturday morning.
Dreyer (195) and Hendricks (285) also kept their medal hopes alive Friday night. Dreyer pinned Sioux City Heelan's Christian Brobst in 1:35 to avenge losses to Brobst in both the sectional and district finals earlier in the month.
Hendricks lost a 3-1 decision to Austin Aschenbacher of Decorah in the Friday night consolation round.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON SESSION RESULTS
Wheeler moved into the semifinals by winning his Friday afternoon quarterfinal round match with Cole Bonde of Bedford/Lenox, posting a 10-2 major decision.
Dreyer (195) and Hendricks (285) guaranteed themselves a medal by winning their consolation matches Friday afternoon. Dreyer earned a 3-0 decision over Jake Feldspauch of Central DeWitt while Hendricks pinned Charles City senior Dalton Hamm in 2:41.
OPENING DAY RESULTS
Nikko Wheeler won his first round match at 182 pounds and Reed Dreyer (195) and Dylan Hendricks (285) are alive in the consolation round to lead Humboldt's five-man contingent after the first day of the Class 2A State Wrestling Championships in Des Moines Thursday night (Feb. 14).
Wheeler advanced on the winner's side of the bracket by disposing of Carlisle senior Nathan Stickley with a 22-4 technical fall victory in the first round. Wheeler, 39-9 on the season, will wrestle in the quarterfinal round at 3:30 p.m. on Friday against Bedford/Lenox senior Cole Bonde.
Dreyer suffered a first round loss to Lance Evans of Solon, 6-2, but kept his season alive by dominating Harlan's Cale Stork in the consolation wrestle back, pinning Stork in 2:41. Dreyer (35-5) will wrestle in the consolation round Friday afternoon.
Hendricks, one of four Wildcat juniors in the state meet, opened with a 6-0 loss to Manchester West Delaware senior Dean Broghammer (44-0) at 285 pounds. Hendricks came back in strong fashion, however, winning 4-0 over Zach Davis of Albia. Hendricks will also wrestle Friday late afternoon in the second round consolation.
The season came to an end for two Wildcats in senior Kylie Zender at 113 pounds and junior 138-pounder Thaylan Bowman. Zender suffered a 7-0 loss to Washington junior Fletcher Green in the first round. Zender then lost a hard-fought, 3-1 decision to Louis Gnida of Solon. Zender ends the year with a 36-11 record and a career won-loss mark of 97-32.
Bowman opened the tournament by facing Creston's No. 1 ranked and defending three-time state champion Jake Marlin and lost by fall in 37 seconds. In the consolation wrestleback, Bowman was pinned by Mediapolis junior Drew Foster in 3:05. Foster, ranked No. 3, was upset in the first round. Bowman's record is 19-16.
