Humboldt's boys ended their basketball season Friday night (Feb. 22) in a 68-52 loss to the Clear Lake Lions in a Class 3A District final in the Algona gym.
The Wildcats, who bow out with a 16-7 overall record, were led in scoring by senior guard Michael Orness with 22 points. Senior center Bryan Larson was next with 10. Clear Lake, 15-7, was led by Pete Swenson with 17 points. Gavin Sheakley and Spencer Davidson each had 14 for the Lions, who advance into a substate final in Mason City on Feb. 25 where they'll face Waverly-Shell Rock. Waverly-Shell Rock won their district final over Iowa Falls-Alden, 60-39 in Hampton.
The Wildcats, who led 15-14 after the first quarter, were hampered by 19 turnovers in the game. Humboldt trailed 29-27 at halftime and trailed just 41-37 after three quarters of play. Clear Lake made 20-of-24 free throws in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
