Step one toward replacement of the Sumner Avenue Bridge took place Monday night at the Humboldt City Council meeting.
The council authorized Mayor Walter Jensen to sign a federal aid agreement through the Iowa Department of Transportation for the City Highway Bridge Program Project award in an amount not to exceed $1,000,000, or 80 percent of the eligible costs. Since the preliminary estimated cost of the project is $2,317,900, the city will qualify for the $1 million grant. Under the agreement, the city agrees to let the project within three years.
City Administrator Aaron Burnett said the plans are to let the new bridge project sometime in the fall of 2013, for completion during the 2014 construction season.
In other construction news, the new water tower in the city’s North Industrial Park is nearly completed, according to Burnett. Painting will begin when weather permits. Burnett said.
