Humboldt scored two runs in the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie to turn back Algona, 3-1 in North Central Conference baseball in Humboldt Friday night (July 5). The victory improved Humboldt's record to 17-6 overall, 12-5 in the NCC. A walk and passed ball with bases loaded scored the go-ahead runs in the sixth for Humboldt. Brenden Schnell pitched seven innings of two-hit ball. He struck out eight and walked one.
Humboldt will host Ogden on Monday, July 8, and visit Gilmore City on July 9 to face West Bend-Mallard. Humboldt hosts Hampton-Dumont on July 10. The Wildcats ent their regular season at home on July 16 against Storm Lake.
Bishop Garrigan of Algona jumped on Humboldt for six runs in the first inning and held off the Wildcats late for a 10-8 conference victory in Humboldt Wednesday night (July 3). The Wildcats, 16-6 overall, 11-5 in the North Central Conference, collected 13 hits while Garrigan totaled 14. Chris Witzke took the loss pitching for Humboldt. The Wildcat offense was led by Austin Zylstra, who was 4-for-5 with a homer. Dillon Fevold homered to drive in three runs.
Humboldt's varsity baseball team made it a season sweep of Fort Dodge St. Edmond by turning back the Gaels, 9-4 Monday night (July 1) in Humboldt. The triumph moved Humboldt's season record to 16-5, 11-4 in the North Central Conference.
Humboldt earned another conference victory on June 28 by stopping Eagle Grove, 7-4 in North Central Conference play. Humboldt improved to 15-5 overall, 10-4 in conference play.
Humboldt visited Clarion on June 27 and rolled up an 18-2 victory.
Humboldt upset No. 1 ranked (Class 3A) Clear Lake Wednesday night (June 26), 6-2 at Clear Lake. Clear Lake's 20-game win streak was snapped. The Lions are now 21-2 overall, 9-1 in the NCC. Ben Jacobson struck out 10 to lead Humboldt from the mound. The Wildcats took a 5-2 lead in the third inning and added one run in the fourth.
TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS ANNOUNCED
The Iowa High School Athletic Association released post-season tournament pairings and Humboldt will open Class 3A District Tournament play against Iowa Falls-Alden on July 19 at Boone. The contest begins at 5 p.m. The winner will play Boone or Webster City on July 22. A substate final is July 24 at Boone. The other half of the substate has Adel ADM meeting Perry and Gilbert playing Nevada.
