When the last number was called this past Sunday night, it ended community bingo in Humboldt in its present incarnation at its present location.
For the past 17 years, the Humboldt County Agricultural Society (Fair Board) has operated bingo on the fairgrounds.
While there are still many die-hard bingo fans in the community, the number of participants has experienced a steady decline during the past 10 years.
The numbers have gone down at the same time that overall wagering on games of chance in the state has gone up.
“Lori Flurey has been running the (bingo) operations at the fairgrounds for years now, and we feel that she has done a great job for us. She has tried a variety of different tactics to increase participation and has been frugal in keeping expenses down. Unfortunately, we are seeing fewer and fewer players and with the declining revenue, the fair board does not feel there is enough money to justify running the operation,” Haselhuhn and Fair Board Secretary Jeff Goodell said in a joint statement.
