New displays at Christmasland

Christmasland in Humboldt is now open nightly for the holiday season. This popular holiday attraction sponsored by the Humboldt/Dakota City Noon Kiwanis Club, has been visited by more than 100,000 people since its opening in 1982. Visitors from most of the 50 U.S. states and some foreign countries have seen the displays. Last year there were more than 6,000 visitors to Kiwanis Christmasland. For 2012, there are several new scenes that were purchased featuring large snowmen engaged in various activities. The new displays were made possible by a generous grant from the Humboldt County Community Foundation and local Noon Kiwanis fundraisers. Kiwanis members have also added new insulation and shelving and repainted some scenes for the coming year. The display is open through Dec. 23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Christmasland will also be open Saturday-Sunday afternoons, Dec. 1-2, Dec. 8-9, Dec. 15-16 and Dec. 22-23 from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

GAN fiber optic install progresses

The Humboldt-Dakota City area is rapidly becoming known as one of the technology hotbed places across the state and even the country. Thanks to the ongoing installation of a fiber optic system by Goldfield Access Network, the towns have access to some of the highest Internet speeds in the world. The fiber optic network allows Goldfield Access Network to offer not only Internet service, but also phone service and cable television service. Thus far, a crew of six have completed installations in the northeast part of Humboldt, the industrial park areas and Humboldt Homes, parts of downtown Humboldt and they are working in Dakota City. Next year, southwest Humboldt is scheduled for fiber installation. “People have been pretty receptive. In a lot of cases, the cable television package we offer is about half of what people were paying before,” Darrell Seaba, President of Goldfield Access Network, said. That package includes about 80 channels.

HCMH Board accepts Lenning gift

The Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) Board of Trustees met Monday and covered a variety of topics. The board was pleased to hear of a generous gift from the Glen Lenning estate to HCMH in the amount of $300,000. “Glen was a resident of the long-term care unit and his wife in Springvale Assisted Living. The family didn’t want any special recognition, but we do want to recognize this generous gift,” Hospital CEO Jim Atty reported at Monday’s meeting. Atty said while gifts are typically given through the HCMH Foundation, this one was given to the hospital. The board agreed to place the donated funds into a certificate of deposit as a designated asset for future use for a specific purpose at the hospital. The board also discussed setting a dinner meeting during a Wednesday night in December for purposes of strategic planning.

Richardson motorcade to pass through Humboldt Friday

A local resident, Pat Albrecht, is arranging a way in which people can honor the late Sgt. Joseph Richardson as his motorcade passes through the City of Humboldt. Richardson's body is scheduled to arrive in Fort Dodge on Friday at 10 a.m. His motorcade is expected to pass through Humboldt on Highway 169 between 10:45 a.m. and noon. The motorcade will be traveling to Algona, where his visitation and funeral services will be held. Albrecht says that anyone in the area is welcome to attend a gathering along the highway in the vicinity of the Humboldt High School to honor Richardson. People can park along the shoulders of the highway. Richardson is an Algona native who died fighting with the United States Army in Afghanistan. The 23-year-old was killed after sustaining injuries when enemy forces attacked his unit in the Paktika province of Afghanistan on Nov. 16.
