School superintendent would like slower speeds on Hwy. 169 entering Humboldt

The Humboldt School Board and the Humboldt City Council are still concerned about safety issues in and around the access to the new middle school at Wildcat Road and Highway 169 in town. While it was agreed that improvements have been made, the belief of both entities is that more can be done, assuming some cooperation and further study by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). “I’ve heard lots of discussion after Walt’s letter (in the paper). Now, I’m wondering if a traffic light is such a good idea or not,” Council member Steve Boomgarden said. Humboldt School Superintendent Greg Darling seemed agreeable that perhaps traffic signals could increase the danger for pedestrians, but he emphasized the school would like to see speeds reduced approaching the intersection, particularly from traffic coming from Highway 169 South, into Humboldt. “The school board would like to look at more data. The DOT says that the stop signs are safer than stop lights.

Short takes over as boys basketball coach

HUMBOLDT – When boys practice begins next Monday, Humboldt’s Daryl Short will be back again in full swing. But this time Short begins another season with a new title. Head coach. Short has accepted the reins as head coach of the Humboldt High boys’ basketball squad. After working at the junior varsity and ninth grade levels in recent years, Short takes over the head duties after Jason Heinz, who stepped down last spring after two years guiding the varsity. “It will be more responsibility, but I’m looking forward to the opportunity,” Short said. “We have a lot of kids coming back, including seniors who are coming off a great football season. We’ll have a great nucleus of seniors to rely on for basketball,” Short said. Short inherits a Wildcat varsity squad that posted a 12-11 overall record in 2011-2012, 11-7 and fourth in the North Central Conference. “Having that senior leadership is critical.

Larson 7th at state!

HHS junior clips school recordFORT DODGE – From start to finish, Humboldt High junior Sam Larson ran her best race ever last Saturday (Oct. 27) in the Class 3A State Cross Country Championships. Running in her third state meet at Lakeside Golf Course north of Fort Dodge, Larson saved her best for last and set a school record in the process with a seventh-place finish. Larson breezed the course with a time of 14:58. She topped the school record she had set earlier this season in the low 15:00 range. For Larson, who finished ninth a year ago at state in what was then a new school record time of 15:07, it was all about running the complete race she has strived for all season long. “I feel very good. I was very surprised about my placing. I’m happy with my time,” Larson said. “I wasn’t worried about the girls behind me at the end of the race. I was more focused on the girl right ahead of me. I didn’t quite get her, but that’s all right.

South Tama denies Humboldt, 21-12

Wildcats fall in 2nd round of playoffsHUMBOLDT – When the Humboldt High football team scored their first touchdown with 8:37 left to play, an energized head coach Greg Thomas shouted to his players, “we can do this.” And up until the final minute of the Wildcats’ 21-12 second round Class 3A playoff loss to the South Tama Trojans Monday night in Humboldt, who could doubt this Wildcat football team. After all, this was the same Wildcat squad – a senior-laden squad – that picked itself off the turf back in early September and won seven straight games to win their district title and earn the school’s first playoff berth in six years. But the Trojans’ bruising rushing attack and some untimely miscues proved to be too much for Humboldt to overcome as they saw their season come to an end on a cold, bitter night at Mason Maach Field. “I told the kids in the huddle here after the game that we were staring at 0-3 at the beginning and they hung in there with us coaches and reeled off seven win

COOK OF THE WEEK - VFW AUXILIARY

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice was signed to end the hostilities of the First World War. On Nov. 11, 1919, President Wilson proclaimed it a day to remember the signing of that document and the idea was a suspension of business at the 11th hour. On June 4, 1926 it was officially recognized as the end of the war. On May 13, 1938, Armistice Day, as it was then known, became a legal holiday; and on June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veteran’s Day to honor all who had served their country in military service. Since Sunday is Veteran’s Day, the next two cook columns will be dedicated to our veterans and two organizations whose goal is to help our veterans and their families, The American Legion and The VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars).
