GC-B's Warren honored for school board leadership

The Iowa Association of School Boards recognizes that learning and leadership on the part of school board members makes a difference at the board table and for students. At IASB’s 67th Annual Con-vention on Nov. 15, Gilmore City-Bradgate school board member Ron Warren was hon-ored for making that difference. Through IASB’s Better Boardsmanship Awards Pro-gram, Warren received an Award of Achievement certifi-cate. This award recognizes board members who put forth extra time and energy to strengthen their boardsmanship abilities through formal in-service programs, workshops and other commitments such as advocating with legislators or serving on statewide committees or boards. Warren also serves on the IASB Board of Directors, representing District 2 in north central Iowa. IASB board president Patti Fields commended Warren for his hard work.

Saddle up for the Cowboy Church

Cowboy hats, boots and bolo ties are encouraged, but leave the spurs at home please. They mark up the pews. All jawing aside, people seeking a warm, friendly, causal and relaxed atmosphere to worship the Lord, may want to consider the Cowboy Church. The Cowboy Church is something that Gary Ehrle, lay minister with the Faith United Methodist Church, developed at his previous church and brought to Humboldt. “It all started about 2-1/2 years ago. I was in the Belle Plaine area and the pastor, a lay speaker at the church there and myself were kicking around ideas for worship. We wanted something unique to draw interest and create a unique worship service.” The Cowboy Church was born. “We rely heavily on bluegrass, country and western and country gospel music. It’s a real laid back service with some congregation participation and lots of singing. There might even be a joke or humorous story,” Ehrle said.

Administrative changes in store for Food Pantry

Users of the Humboldt County Food Pantry will see little change, but there are some changes from a financial and bookkeeping standpoint for the service. Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO) has announced a change that will take place between UDMO and the Humboldt County Ministerial Association (HCMA) starting Jan. 1, 2013. Individuals who are in need of food pantry foodstuffs starting in the New Year will no longer need to come to the UDMO office located on the third floor of the courthouse. To obtain a voucher for food assistance, an individual will go directly to the Food Pantry at the Humboldt County Secondary Road office located at 2221 220th St. (Highway 3) in Humboldt. “UDMO is excited that the HCMA will be taking over the food pantry for this will provide easier access to the pantry for individuals. Having the food assistance under one roof should make the process friendlier and easier to use,” said Mary Ohrtman, outreach director for UDMO in Humboldt County.
