County to have new flag

Humboldt County has a new flag, or soon will have. “Every county in the state has a county flag that flies during the Iowa State Fair at the fairgrounds,” Humboldt County Auditor Peggy Rice explained. Humboldt County’s flag has been a plain white flag representing the county, with some small red dots representing the towns. The county commissioned Bonita McLarnan of Humboldt to design a new flag that was more colorful and more representative of what Humboldt County actually is like. McLarnan’s design (pictured) is in Humboldt Wildcat colors, blue and gold. She notes that the colors are also used on the city of Humboldt water tower and on police force vehicles. The striped waves in the flag represent the flow of the Des Moines River, the flow of citizens coming and going, the flow of businesses and industries in the county and the flow of our children, McLarnan said.

Jim fills her up for the last time

An era is about to end this week when Johnny’s Service Station in Humboldt closes on Feb. 28. The station, owned and operated by Jim Van Horn, is the last remaining full-service gas station in Humboldt. “After 46 years it’s time to call it quits,” Van Horn said last week. On a nearby calendar on the wall of his station, Van Horn has “Freedom Day” written in bold, black letters in the date box. “Right now I don’t have a game plan. I’ll start taking it easy and enjoy life,” Van Horn said. “I’ve had great customers over the years. I’m going to miss the people. I know that. I’ll have to adjust to that for sure. Still being in good health and everything, I feel now is the time to take some of that rocking chair money and enjoy life,” Van Horn said. “If I get bored, I wouldn’t mind finding a part-time job doing something different for a change,” Van Horn said.

Bollmeyers to retire at GC-B School

For the past 35 years, Gilmore City has been home for Ron and Deb Bollmeyer. That’s why last week’s Gilmore City-Bradgate School Board meeting was a little bit emotional when the board accepted the resignation and early retirement application for the pair of educators, effective at the end of the current school year. Ron Bollmeyer, a western Iowa native from Correctionville, has served the district in many capacities since he arrived in the fall of 1978 to teach mathematics and coach. He taught math for 13 years, served as principal for 13 years and then over the past nine years he has been both principal and superintendent for the district. Deb Bollmeyer, a central Iowa native from Kelley, teaches several classes in the Gilmore City building. She teaches Social Studies, Language Arts, technology and 21st Century Skills.

The single-family residential development is located on land east of Elmhurst Avenue. Many of the lots in this offering are heavily wooded, and range in size from .45 of an acre to 2.68 acres. Council favors aesthetics for bridge

The Humboldt City Council would like some aesthetic enhancements for the new Sumner Avenue Bridge. Now, it’s just a question of what and how much. The council heard a report from Stan Stallsmith, senior structural engineer with WHKS and Company, an engineering firm in Mason City, who provided a preliminary design report on bridge structures to the Humboldt City Council two years ago, but the project was stalled because of funding restraints. Stallsmith gave his report at the council’s regular bi-monthly meeting, Tuesday, Feb. 19. The three-span, concrete spandrel arch bridge that crosses the Des Moines River at the west entrance to downtown Humboldt was constructed in 1920, so it is now more than 90 years old. The length of the bridge is 244 feet with two spans of 78.5 feet and one of 87 feet. Stallsmith said the Humboldt City Council can determine the aesthetic level for the bridge in the next few months, after which preliminary design plans will be finalized.
