Lessa to lead Humboldt girls’ soccer

Calling it “an honor,” Christiane Lessa is excited about becoming the new head coach of the Humboldt High School girls’ soccer program. Lessa, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the first-year head coach of the Iowa Central Community College women’s squad, is taking the reins of the fledging new Wildcat program. “I’m very happy and excited to be coming to Humboldt and lead the program. It’s great to be here. It’s a challenge, but I’m honored to help Humboldt make history,” Lessa said. “Every time the girls touch the soccer ball, I tell them they are making history. It’s going to be a lot of hard work, but they seem to have the passion that will make our job easy to work with them.” “I’m honored to have this opportunity at Humboldt,” Lessa said. Lessa, who works in the ICCC advising department, brings a wealth of soccer knowledge to north central Iowa.

Clinic, hospital to look for new physician

The Trimark Physicians Group and Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) will be looking for a new family practice physician, it was reported at Monday’s HCMH Board of Trustees meeting. Dr. Theo Barley will be resigning from the clinic later this year, to pursue a practice opportunity in Clarinda, HCMH Chief Executive Officer Jim Atty told the board. Barley has practiced in Humboldt for the past 2-1/2 years. He grew up in the African nation of Chad and did not attend school until the age of 12. He met a U.S. missionary, who helped him attend a church school and he sold Bibles and other books to raise enough money to eventually attend the University of Alabama, earning his nursing degree and later was able to obtain his medical degree in 2005. Atty said he doesn’t know the date Barley will be leaving Humboldt, but it could be sometime in June. Atty said Trimark in cooperation with the Trinity Regional Health System, is working on physician recruitment.

Supervisors get ready to rumble on roads

Humboldt County will be getting rumble strips to alert traffic to oncoming stop signs, in an effort to slow traffic and reduce accidents at the county’s intersections. The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the additions at nearly 60 intersection locations in the county. The traffic safety additions may be phased in as work can be completed, and as funds are available. The board action followed a presentation by Humboldt County Engineer Paul Jacobson and Assistant Engineer Dave Powell Monday, at the board’s regular weekly meeting. Powell presented a number of statistics regarding traffic accidents in the county during the past 10 years. The engineers estimated the costs to do all of the rumble strips to be in excess of $25,000, it would include the regrinding of existing rumble strips.

COOK OF THE WEEK - SAMANTHA EASTMAN

This week’s cook is a relative newcomer to Humboldt, having lived here only five years. Samantha Eastman grew up in northern California where she lived in a beautiful valley surrounded by the Cascade Mountains of Oregon and the Sierra Nevada mountains. She chose to settle in Humboldt because she found it a beautiful area that reminds her of a little valley having to go up the hill to leave town. She and her 5-year old son, Trevor, enjoy the trails and the parks. Samantha works at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital and also runs her own massage therapy business. She is a member of the Humboldt Community Chorus and enjoys all Humboldt has to offer especially in the areas of art and music. Besides cooking and singing, Samantha loves kayaking and horseback riding. Samantha has a long history of cooking, being able to fix a meal from the stove at the age of 7.
