HHS girls post 41-shot victory

HUMBOLDT – Humboldt's varsity girls' golf team posted a 41-shot victory Tuesday night (April 23) at Webster City, shooting a 193 total. Host Webster City was second with 234 and Iowa Falls-Alden tallied 235.Savannah Schnetzer and Caitlin Kohlhaas were meet medalists in shooting a 42 and 47, respectively, to pace Humboldt. Ashley Samuelson shot 51 and Shelby Shepard 53. Humboldt's junior varsity shot a 222 to take top honors as they were led by Dani Stalpes with 54 and Melanie Vote with 55.On Friday, April 26 at Fort Dodge, Humboldt placed third among four schools in a conference quad at Lakeside Golf Course. The Wildcats totaled 198. Clear Lake won with 184 and Algona Bishop Garrigan was second at 193. St. Edmond shot 211. Savannah Schnetzer shot a 48 to pace HHS. Wildcat girls 2nd in Storm Lake Relays

Humboldt's girls won six events and placed second in the team scoring of the Storm Lake Invitational Thursday night (April 25).Humboldt's girls took first-place in the 4x800 relay (10:37), the shuttle hurdle relay (1:11), the distance medley relay (4:49), the 4x400 relay (4:37), April Jones in the 1,500 (5:45) and Maddie Kampen in the 800 meters (2:37).The 4x800 relay consisted of Brittney Nilles, Hannah Friesth, Maddie Kampen and Kenzie Ross. The shuttle hurdle relay includes Maggy Duffield, Erica Lane, Brittney Nilles, Kaitlyn Jensen. The 4x400 relay was run by Friesth, Ross, Kampen and Duffield. The distance medley comprised of Emily Hughes, Anna Tecklenburg, Duffield and Jones.Also, in the Drake Relays on Thursday, Sam Larson finished 16th out of 20 runners in the 3,000-meter run high school division.The Wildcats return to action at Mason City on April 30. Peters finally settling in at ISU

Levi Peters is finally back on the football field. Peters, a Gilmore City native and former Twin River Valley and Fort Dodge High standout, is enjoying an injury-free spring of playing football for Iowa State University. Peters underwent knee surgery twice in 2011 and enrolled at Iowa State that fall as a part-time student, not to use up any athletic eligibility. Then a year ago, on the third day of spring practice, he broke a bone in his foot and the surgery and resulting down time all but forced him to red-shirt in 2012. He’s finally healthy and paying his dues in spring ball. Peters and the Cyclones will wrap up spring ball with their annual spring game this Saturday (April 20) at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. “It’s good. It’s very competitive. It’s fun putting the pads on. I haven’t had live football since my senior year of high school. I got hurt on the third practice last spring.

Dresser receives ACC coaching honors

Kevin Dresser will tell you he’s not satisfied with just making the top 10 in the NCAA national wrestling tournament. The Humboldt native and veteran head wrestling coach of the Virginia Tech University Hokies, shared his thoughts with the Independent three weeks after his squad finished 10th in the NCAA Division I-A national championships held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Mar. 20-22. Dresser took all 10 of his wrestlers to Des Moines and ended up with four All-Americans who earned medals. It capped a banner year for the Hokies, whom Dresser has poured a lot of blood, sweat and tears into developing into a national, top-10 contender. The Hokies finished the year unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference duals and also won the ACC tournament title.

Humboldt boys 2nd in golf triangular at Iowa Falls

IOWA FALLS - The rugged North Central Conference boys' golf race got a little bit tougher. Tuesday night (April 23) at Highland Golf Course in Iowa Falls, the Wildcats finished second in a three-team race with the Cadets and Webster City.Webster City shot a 164, Humboldt 166 and Iowa Falls-Alden 176. Christian Birdsell paced Humboldt with a 39, followed by Jaxon Heinz at 41, Landon Schnetzer with 42 and Colton Schnetzer with a 44. WC was led by Avery Fuhs with 38 and Alec Fuhs with 39. Luke Bahr paced Iowa Falls-Alden with 42 while Tim Taylor shot 44, Quinn Taylor 45 and Luke Meyer 45.The Wildcats golf at Algona Bishop Garrigan on Friday, April 26, and at Storm Lake on Saturday, April 27.See the Humboldt Independent Newspaper for complete story and photos. Humboldt's boys won three events and placed fifth in the Storm Lake Invitational Thursday night (April 25).The Wildcat boys were led by Jacob Miller, who won the 1,600 (4:55) and 3,200 meters (10:22), and Bryan Larson won the discus (132-9). HHS soccer team falls to Clear Lake, 3-1

HUMBOLDT – Clear Lake upended Humboldt's varsity boys' soccer team by a 3-1 count Tuesday night in Humboldt.The Wildcats, now 1-3 on the season, got their only goal from Craig Fishel. New administrator named for Humboldt Care Centers

Sandy Terveer is the new administrator for Humboldt Care Centers North and South. Terveer started in Humboldt on March 25, coming to Humboldt from Sioux City where she was a nursing home administrator the past four years. “I wanted to get back to rural Iowa. The organization that owns the Humboldt Care Centers (Jerry and Nancy Voyna of Quality Health Care Facilities) are topnotch. Quality care is a passion for them and for me,” Terveer said. Quality Health Care Facilities, based out of Clive, will soon own its 10th facility in May. “Humboldt has been so welcoming and friendly from the staff, the towns people to the service providers. I’m just tickled pink to be here,” Terveer said. Her goal with the Humboldt Care Centers is to continue to provide the highest quality care. Humboldt Care Centers employ between 120 and 130 people in the community. Humboldt Care Center North is licensed for 90 residents and Humboldt Care Center South is licensed for 40 residents.
