May snow dumps 6 inches on Humboldt

What began Wednesday afternoon as rain, turned to sleet and then a heavy, wet snow overnight, dumping 6 inches of snow in Humboldt County. The combination of ice and wet snow caused many budding, mature trees to snap under the weight and also broke power lines and poles. At 11 a.m. on Thursday, the Midland Power web site was reporting 113 Humboldt County customers without power, 234 in Kossuth County and 396 in Pocahontas County. MidAmerican Energy was reporting 75 customers without power in Humboldt County with more than 100 in Pocahontas County and nearly 100 in Kossuth County. Electrical crews were trying to restore power Thursday, due to the freak winter blast. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office issued a nixle alert Thursday morning, urging citizens to be extremely cautious due to the large amount of downed trees and power lines.
