Boomgarden looks at keeping zoning position over council seat

Humboldt Ward 1 City Council member Steve Boomgarden reported this week that he is strongly considering resigning from the Humboldt City Council in favor of keeping a part-time zoning administrator position with the city, a post he has held for the past year. During Monday's Humboldt City Council meeting, it was discussed that Boomgarden could probably not keep both jobs and be in compliance with the Code of Iowa. Boomgarden said as much as he has enjoyed serving on the Humboldt City Council, he would probably have to the choose the higher-paying zoning position.

COOK OF THE WEEK - NORMA HAUCK

This week’s cook believes in keeping things as natural as possible. Instead of sugar in her recipes, she uses honey. The fact that she keeps bees and has her own honey makes this much easier. Norma Hauck, the daughter of the late Leila and Tom Taylor, was born in southern Iowa. In 1948 her parents moved to rural Livermore so her father could work for Wallace Hauck’s uncle. That was how Norma met Wally, her future husband. Norma graduated from Gilmore City High School. Wally grew up in the Humboldt/Livermore area and graduated from Gilmore City High School. Norma and Wally were married for 61 years at the time of his passing in 2011. They are the parents of six children: Sherry and her husband, Dennis Foth, live in Bozeman, MT; Kenneth and his wife, Kelly, live in Livermore; Carol and her husband, Monte Ballard, live in Ankeny; Christy and her husband, Brian McCullough, live in Livermore; Steven and his wife, Kathy, live in Humboldt; and Robert lives in Livermore.

No contested races for school board; seats open

There will be no contested races in area school board elections, slated for Tuesday, Sept. 10. In fact, there will be a few seats that will need to be filled by write-in ballot. There is no declared candidate for District 2 in the Twin Rivers District, and there is only one candidate to fill three seats on the Gilmore City-Bradgate Board of Education. In GC-B, the seats of current board members Ron Warren, Beau Jergens and Judy Marchant are all up for election, but only Marchant has turned in papers to run. The filing deadline was last week. In Twin Rivers, Davanna Fedkenheuer has filed papers to run for the District 1 seat, while incumbent board member Tom Olson is running for District 3. The District 2 seat will have to be filled by write-in. All seats are up for election in Humboldt. Candidates include Janell Smith in District 1, Kyle Kluender in District 2, Randy Hildreth in District 3, Brody Clark in District 4, and Suzanne Newton running for the at-large seat.
