Fareway store raises funds for Honor Flight

Fareway Store in Humboldt raised $2,401 for the upcoming Brushy Creek Honor Flight scheduled next month. The proceeds came from an outdoor meal the store served to the public on Aug. 2. Humboldt County Farm Bureau was on hand to help make the burgers. “We served a hamburger, chips and drink for a freewill donation, and the turnout from the community was great,” Fareway Store manager Todd Treganza said. “The community really supported the program and we had a lot of help. The city let us use flags and picnic tables. The beverage vendors donated a lot of pop. Frito Lay Company donated potato chips. Farm Bureau prepared the burgers. Fareway donated the buns,” Treganza said. “ “Because of the support, we will be able to send four veterans to the memorial in Washington, D.C., next month,” Treganza said. “We thank Todd and Fareway for setting up the event and for Farm Bureau for all of its help.

Council approves bridge aesthetics

The new Sumner Avenue Bridge won’t look like the current bridge, but will have some aesthetic design elements, after action by the Humboldt City Council Monday night. After much discussion, the council settled on a standard open rail concrete fence. It will be 2-feet, 8-inches tall on the south side of the road. The north side of the bridge will have the same concrete fence with a T-style powder-coated galvanized steel black open rail fence above the concrete, extending to a height of 42 inches above the sidewalk, or 3-feet, 6-inches. The railing on the north side of the sidewalk, next to the river, will be the galvanized steel black rail fencing, the same 3-feet, 6-inches in height. If someone would like to see what the railing and fence would look like, they should drive on the Cedar Street Bridge overlooking the Boone River in Goldfield. The railing and fence will look much like that.

COOK OF THE WEEK - BACK TO SCHOOL RECIPES

School is right around the corner and summer is winding down. For many this means getting back to a regular routine and for many a more hectic life. But a hectic life should not mean skipping breakfast. According to Steve Dowshen on kidshealth.org, “Breakfast is indeed a very important meal. A good breakfast fuels you up and gets you ready for the day. In general, kids and teens who eat breakfast have more energy, do better in school, and eat healthier throughout the day. Without breakfast, people can get irritable, restless, and tired.” Eating breakfast may even help with weight loss according the Mayo Clinic. Eating breakfast helps reduce hunger later in the day so the “quick fixes” such as trips to the vending machines can be avoided. A habit of skipping breakfast may lead to an increase in the body’s insulin response, which actually increases fat storage and weight gain. Eating breakfast refuels the body and provides energy.
