Sit with a soldier, listen to a vet

Humboldt area residents will have the opportunity to honor Veterans on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. “Sit with a Soldier, Listen to a Veteran” will take place that afternoon as the stories of 25 Veterans are shared. Pam Davis, one of the organizers of the event, said it was so well received two years ago it was decided to do it again. The format will be a bit different. Students from Doug Van Pelt’s history classes will be interviewing the 25 Veterans in advance. The stories will be read at the Nov. 10 event. “For a lot of Veterans, telling their story in front of a large group is difficult. This is a way for all of us to hear their stories, to honor them and to show what went into us having the freedoms we have today,” Davis said. There will be cookies and coffee served afterwards.

Chamber/rec director position to be dissolved

Due to the amount of hours and commitments of the job, the city of Humboldt is deciding to dissolve the joint position of Chamber of Commerce director and city recreation director. That decision was among the many items acted upon at Monday night’s Humboldt City Council meeting. Two years ago, it was decided to combine the positions into two part-time positions, with the Chamber paying for half of the salary. Susan Rutz was hired at the time to fill the position. “She has done a great job over the past two years and is very hands-on and has added stability to the Chamber, but the job as it is structured is such that there are so many demands on her time, it was going from a 40-hour a week position to well over that,” City Administrator Aaron Burnett said. “After discussions with the Chamber of Commerce Board and the Park Board, it was agreed that a separation of the duties was the best.
