Jones, Peters 1st team all-NCC volleyball

Humboldt is represented by four players on the North Central All-Conference volleyball team released by the league coaches recently. Senior hitter April Jones and senior setter Sarah Peters were both chosen first-team while senior back row specialist Brittney Nilles was a second-team pick and senior hitter Lindsey Johnson a third-team pick.The foursome helped Humboldt compile a 20-10 won-loss record in 2013, including 6-3 in conference play. The squad will be honored at a potluck dinner banquet on Friday, Nov. 15, 6:30 p.m. at the high school cafeteria.See complete story in the Nov. 21 issue of the Humboldt Independent Newspaper.

Davis earns Humboldt Council seat

Changes for the mayoral seats in the communities of Bode, Gilmore City, Bradgate and Thor, as well as several new faces on city councils highlighted the local city elections held Nov. 5, in Humboldt County. Incumbent mayors were unseated in the communities of Bode and Thor, while other incumbents retained their seats in races, including one decided by a handful of votes in the town of Livermore. In Humboldt, incumbent Mayor Walter Jensen breezed to re-election with 170 votes. Barry Ellis, who had ran against Jensen in the past, announced an 11th-hour write-in candidacy. For Humboldt City Council, there were two at-large council seats but only one declared candidate. Longtime council member Darrell Rusher was re-elected with 157 votes. The second at-large four-year term was filled by write-in, as incumbent Joe Hadar did not seek re-election.

Veteran's Day program is Nov. 11

The annual Humboldt County Veteran’s Day program will be held on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. on the south side of the Humboldt County Courthouse in Dakota City. Featured speaker will be Sandi Lee, President of Dakota City VFW Post 5240 Auxiliary. Dave Lee, Commander of VFW Post 5240, will open the ceremonies and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. An opening prayer will be given by Pastor Christy Ehrle. Music will be presented by the Harmony Brigade. Following the speech by Sandi Lee will be the posting of the wreath by Dave Lee and Sandi Lee. Sathers Odgaard VFW Post 5240 and Adams Legion Post 119 firing squad will fire a salute while taps is played by HHS students Luke Yoakam and Lindsey Curry. Dave Lee will close the ceremony. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
