New businesses add to economic growth in county

What’s new in the county was the main topic of discussion during Monday’s Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting. The board heard about what’s new in county economic development from Humboldt County Development Association (HCDA) Director Alissa Reinholdt. Reinholdt reported on the two big projects HCDA has been working on this past year, the Precision Tank and Equipment plant in the city’s Northwest Industrial Park, and the new Bomgaars store being constructed in the Humboldt Business Park. Reinholdt reported that the two projects will bring in more than $6 million in capital investment to Humboldt County and more than $4 million in additional property tax valuation in just one year. She said the Precision Tank and Equipment project began more than two years ago and resurfaced this past February. Ground was broken this past summer on the $3.6 million project which will include a 35,000 square foot building and 14 employees.

Fire destroys Humboldt home; couple escapes injury

A fire Sunday evening totaled the house, but the owners were able to get out in time. The Humboldt Fire Department was paged out at 9:01 p.m. on Sunday night, Dec.15, to 907 3rd Avenue North in Humboldt, the home of Delmar (Keel) and Marlene Zinnel. Their son, Kevin, said his father called him and his brother, Keel, and said he smelled smoke. Keel and his wife, Ann, arrived first at the house and Keel tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. Kevin and Tony Hosford arrived and the group was able to get Marlene out of the house. She suffered a cut on her leg. “As I drove up to the house I could see flames coming out the back. That’s when I called 9-1-1 and got the fire department rolling,” Kevin, an EMT with the Humboldt Ambulance Service, said. Fire Chief Tony Hosford said when firefighters arrived, flames were coming out of the east wall. Hosford said the fire started in the bathroom in the outer wall and spread up into the attic.

COOK OF THE WEEK - DOROTHY STAMPER

The week before Christmas seems like the perfect time to remember a dear friend who actually lived Christmas all year long. My fondest memories of Dorothy Stamper were her many choir parties she held for her choir members and their spouses. She was a devoted choir director for over 55 years. She actually played the piano and directed us at the same time! We all brought goodies to share at these parties, but if you checked in her breezeway between their garage and their house you could find 50 or more kinds of cookies and candy. She did this every year and she always shared with her family and everyone in the community. We always caroled at these parties also. The first 25 years of parties were spent walking and caroling around all of Gilmore City. Then they rode in cars and piled out of the cars at each place to carol to people.
