HCMH readies for electronic health records

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) will be introducing a new computer management system that will provide an electronic health record of all patients. The system is called EPIC, and will be introduced beginning Sunday, Feb. 2. “It is something that all hospitals will be required to have in the coming years. “The timing is right now for us to be able to choose a solution to having a portable electronic health record for patients rather than waiting to the future, when we could incur government penalties for not having adapted,” HCMH Chief Executive Officer Jim Atty said. With an electronic health record, doctors will make prescriptions via computer that will be order entry into the pharmacy’s computer and will also keep track of dosages and refills. Because physicians will have access to up-to-the-minute health records, there promises to be fewer redundant lab tests.
