Council says no to apartment complex

Fueled by public concerns and a nominal property offer by the developer, the Humboldt City Council agreed not to move forward with the sale of a portion of the lot at 613 Sumner Ave. The action came at the council’s regular bi-monthly meeting Monday at the Humboldt City Hall. Local real estate developer Kevin Skow had proposed development of a four-unit apartment complex on the north half of the lot where the Downtown Plaza and Lady of Mist statue now stand. The development would not impact the southern plaza area of the property. The council held a public hearing on the sale of the north half of the lot at 613 Sumner Ave. Skow offered $1. He said his intent was to build a four-plex apartment building with four garages all on one level with an option to sell the apartments individually if people were interested in owning instead of renting. He estimated the cost of the project to be $300,000.

COOK OF THE WEEK - FRAN HOFFMAN

By looking at the picture of our Cook of the Week, it is easy to see that Fran Hoffman loves to collect recipes. She has a whole shelf of recipe books on her right. On her left is an antique china cabinet that protects and displays some of her favorite pieces of china. The three bowls on the top shelf belonged to her maternal grandmother and the blue and white patterned bowl and serving platter on the second shelf belonged to her paternal grandmother. What fun to be able to cherish the memories she has (of her grandmothers using these dishes) that she now cherishes as heirlooms. Fran and her husband, Bob Hoffman, are fairly new to the Humboldt community, moving into Humboldt from Renwick just this past summer. She already knows a lot of people in Humboldt since she is retired from nursing and worked at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital for over 20 years.
