Humboldt home sales are consistent

The Humboldt County housing market remained the picture of consistency in 2013, not varying much from the previous year or quarter-to-quarter. That’s the conclusion drawn from facts compiled by John Westphal, a real estate agent with Smith Real Estate in Humboldt. According to the figures compiled by John Westphal, real estate agent for Smith Realty in Humboldt, in 2013, 87 homes sold in Humboldt for a total price of $9,304,400. The mean price of the homes was $106,947. In Dakota City, 19 homes sold, totaling $1,000,175, with a mean price of $52,640. A total of 45 homes sold in the surrounding towns of Bode, Livermore, Gilmore City, Bradgate, Thor, Hardy and Rolfe. The total sales price was $1,492,800, with a mean of $33,173. Compared to 2012, 10 fewer homes sold in Humboldt in 2013. Six more homes sold in Dakota City in ‘13, compared to 2012. In the surrounding communities listed above, 11 more homes sold in 2013, than in 2012.

COOK OF THE WEEK - DONNA LISCUM

It was obvious that I was visiting Hawkeye fans as I stepped into the porch of Donna Liscum. There were several indications sitting or hanging in the porch. But what really caught my eye was the beautiful woodwork in Donna’s home. They live in the house that her dad, Wilbur Nissen, grew up in. His mother (Donna’s grandmother) lived to the age of 104. It was under different ownership for a while but when Donna and Larry moved back to the Renwick area, they purchased the home and lived in the basement while she refinished all of the woodwork. What a job! And she did a beautiful job on it. Donna and Larry Liscum celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in October of 2013. The picture she gave me to use is of their complete family on their 60th wedding anniversary. They grew up in Renwick and were high school sweethearts, both graduating from Renwick High School. They had two children, Curtis and Chris. Curtis and Deb live in Cedar Rapids.

COOK OF THE WEEK - LINDA LANE

She told me she did lots of crafts, but when I walked into her home, I couldn’t believe the beautiful items that she had made – quilts, afghans, designing her curtains and draperies, angels, room décor - everything was personally Linda Lane’s handy work. Linda is a cosmetologist and has a shop in one end of her home. She was kind enough to rearrange clients so that she had time to visit with me. She has been a cosmetologist for 39 years and of that time she has had her own shop 38 years. Linda and her husband, Rick, have been married for 39 years. I asked her how or when they met. She replied, “In kindergarten, maybe earlier than that!” As children they even had the same interests – love of animals and sports. Rick is a rural mail carrier and also helps part time doing auctions. Linda was a native of Hardy. Her parents are Joe and Jerry Crossley. Rick grew up in Hardy and Renwick. Rick’s parents are Bob and Mary Ann Lane. They both graduated from Boone Valley High School.
