Fort won't run; seven file for seat

Forty-five years on the job is a long time. “I’ve enjoyed it, and I hate to leave, but it’s time,” said Humboldt County’s longtime Recorder Linda Fort. Fort was one of three county employees honored for years of service to the county at Monday’s Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting. Her 45 years have all been at the east end of the hallway at the Humboldt County Courthouse in Dakota City—25 years as the deputy recorder and 20 years as the county recorder. She will fill out her current term through the end of the year. According to Humboldt County Auditor Peggy Rice, there is no shortage of people willing to seek the county recorder's office. Six Republicans and one Democrat have filed to run for a four-year term as county recorder. Republicans Diane K. Amudson, Kathy M. Christianson, Katherine Erickson, Terri Bryant Stufflebean, Melissa A. Vaudt and Heather Wilson have all filed papers, along with Democrat Glenda Colwell.

Gronbach Construction receives bus barn contract

After years of planning and changes, the Humboldt Community School District bus barn project is now a reality. In their regular monthly Monday night (Mar. 17), the Humboldt School Board approved a bid of $263,548 from Gronbach Construction Company of Dakota City, to construct a new bus barn south of the existing facility, which is located just south of Casey’s General Store on 5th Street South in downtown Dakota City. Sande Construction Company of Humboldt submitted the other bid, which totaled $287,399. School Superintendent Greg Darling says with added options onto the project, it will still end up well below the $300,000 originally projected. “Buses have a life of 15-20 years tops, and so statistics show that if you have equipment and vehicles under a roof, it extends the life of vehicles and equipment,” Darling said. “It makes a difference.

Devastating fires in LuVerne, Thor

Area fire departments haven’t gotten much sleep the last two evenings, as early morning fires struck the communities of LuVerne early Wednesday morning, and a residential home in Thor early Thursday morning. LuVerne Fire Chief Dave McPeak reported that the department was called to the NEW Cooperative in LuVerne shortly before midnight Tuesday evening, for a wood and steel granary structure that was in the process of being demolished. McPeak said flames were already shooting from headhouse part of the structure when fire crews arrived. Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger said he could see a small flame from his residence south of Hardy. “A few minutes later it was like a large orange ball,” the sheriff said. LuVerne contacted several area fire departments for mutual aid, largely for water. Crews from Humboldt, Bode, Gilmore City, Livermore, Goldfield, Renwick, Kanawha, Corwith and Hardy responded to the call.
