Meals from the Heartland is realizing something people in Humboldt County have known for a long time — when it comes to charity, we don’t like to be outdone. Meals from the Heartland, the all-volunteer effort to help feed the hungry, successfully completed its fourth annual meal raising this past weekend, with hundreds of thousands of meals packaged, tens of thousands of funds raised and over 900 local volunteers participating, making the goodwill effort, sponsored by the Humboldt County Ministerial Association, the largest community-wide volunteer event in the county. Correction, make that several counties and even the entire state! Meals from the Heartland Executive Director Dave Bradley, a Humboldt native, proclaimed Humboldt County as the largest in number of meals packaged and volunteers of any of the county meal raisings in the state.

Swan harvest is something to trumpet

Five Trumpeter Swans were relocated from the Humboldt swan pond along Highway 169 last Tuesday, April 8. The swans were born last May and are being relocated as part of the Iowa DNR’s program to bring back the Trumpeter Swan. A total of six swans were born last year with five surviving. In 2012, three swans were born and just one survived to be relocated in the spring of 2013. Dave Hoffman, DNR Wildlife Technician based out of Clear Lake, said they hope the Trumpeter Swans will nest in the wild eventually. He said the last time they nested in the wild in Humboldt County would have been in the late 1800s. The swans were gone from Iowa from the late 1800s until being reintroduced by the DNR with the tremendous help of the public and support from cities like Humboldt. The captive breeding program in Humboldt is helping the cause. To read more about the program and see more photos, read this week's Humboldt Independent.
