HHS boys fall in substate soccer, 9-0

Humboldt's varsity boys' soccer season came to an end Thursday night (May 29) in a Class 2A substate semifinal round soccer game at Waverly. The Wildcats fell to the top-ranked Go-Hawks, 9-0.Humboldt fell behind 3-0 at halftime and couldn't get much going after that. Wildcat senior goalkeeper Jack Curran broke school career and season save records. Humboldt bows out with a 7-10 record.See complete story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper. Primary election is set for June 3

The primary election for Humboldt County will be Tuesday, June 3, with polling places open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Voters will be able to cast absentee ballots at the auditor’s office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Monday, June 2. The auditor’s office will be open this Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for voters to cast absentee ballots. Polling places are the same as the 2012 general election, but there were some changes prior to that time, so people should make note of their voting precinct and polling place listed below.

Gearhart and Schmidt honored at WBM/GC-B

Cassandra Gearhart was named Valedictorian of the WBM-GC-B High School graduating Class of 2014 at commencement ceremonies held May 18, in the West Bend School gymnasium. Salutatorian honors went to Ashley Schmidt. Numerous awards and scholarships were awarded to the graduating seniors. Wildcat baseball, softball teams win openers

The Humboldt High baseball team had no trouble in winning their season opener at home on May 27, rolling to a 10-2 victory over East Sac County.Wildcat pitcher Chris Witzke pitched six innings with 14 strikeouts and no walks. Humboldt's 11-hit attack was paced by Brenden Schnell with three hits and three RBI. Nick Laing had two hits and three RBI. Dillon Fevold, Austin Zylstra and Brady Shelgren each had two hits.Humboldt travels to Cherokee on Thursday, May 29. They visit Ogden on May 30 and host Garrigan on June 2.Humboldt's varsity softball team used a four-run fifth inning to topple Ogden, 7-1 in their season opener in Humboldt. Humboldt produced nine hits to back Avery Terwilliger's five-hit pitching. Taylor Gidel, Sarah Peters and Beth Duffield each had two hits to pace Humboldt, including a homer by Gidel.See complete story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper.

Wildcat girls set 2 records in state track

The Humboldt High girls' track team set two school records competing in the Class 3A state track and field championships in Des Moines last week.The Wildcats' 4x800 meter relay of Brittney Nilles, Sam Larson, Beth Duffield and Maddie Kampen placed seventh with a time of 9:43.41. Kampen ran 12th in the 800-meters in 2:22.59 for another record. The Wildcats' Larson was also eighth in the 3,000-meters in 10:53.64 and 11th in the 1,500-meters in 4:57.Beth Duffield ran 16th in the 200-meters in 26.79 seconds and was also 17th in the 400-meters in 1:01.55. The Wildcat distance medley relay of Caitlyn Wadsley, Duffield, Kampen and Larson ran 18th while Maggy Duffield was 22nd in the 100-meter hurdles.See complete story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper.
