COOK OF THE WEEK - BLUEBERRY MONTH

July was proclaimed National Blueberry Month by the United States Department of Agriculture on May 8, 1999. Blueberries are grown in 35 states in the U.S., and the United States produces over 90 percent of all of the blueberries in the world. They have been used in soups, stews and more, for centuries. According to Ark-La-Tex, the Native Americans taught the pilgrims to use blueberries in many ways. Blueberries were dried in the sun and ground into a powder. The powder was used to make a pudding called Sautauthig, which would be similar to corn meal blueberry mush. This powder was also used to season meat as a “spice rub.” Our Native Americans believed that these little blue berries were good for your health. Modern medicine also identifies the health benefits of blueberries. Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants, which are supposed to help reduce your chance of getting cancer and heart disease.

Insurance agency turned over to 2nd generation

Maury Abens and Larry Curran have passed the torch to their sons, Bob Abens and Scott Curran, at the Abens-Marty-Curran Agency. Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the younger Abens and Curran purchased the agency from their fathers. The elder Abens and Curran are staying on for a few years as consultants. “It was a good time to make the transition. The guys are ready, and we can still help out part-time,” Larry Curran said. “Bob and Scott have been working up to this point. It was the right time to step back and let the younger guys take over,” Maury said. Maury brought Abens Insurance to Humboldt in 1976. In 1978, he and Lawrence Marty partnered to form the Abens-Marty Insurance Agency. In 1986, Larry Curran joined the agency and it became the Abens-Marty-Curran Agency. Lawrence Marty retired in 1989, but the name of the agency has remained the same. To read more about the local business, subscribe to The Humboldt Independent.
