Wildcat girls focused on another NCC cross country title

Humboldt has won the North Central Conference girls’ cross country title in four of the last five years, so don’t be surprised if the Wildcats claim the top spot in 2014. HHS girls high on talent, optimism entering new volleyball season

After losing four all-conference seniors to graduation, one might think Humboldt High volleyball coach Connie Rasmussen has a rebuilding project in front of her. But the veteran coach, who begins her 15th season at the helm, expects her squad to be just as competitive as last year’s squad that compiled an overall record of 20-10 in 2013, including 6-3 and fourth in a tough North Central Conference. The Wildcats return a wealth of talent at all grade levels, including several underclassmen who held varsity positions last year.See complete story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper. Youthful Wolverines embrace rugged 8-man district 2

Pete Kapustynski, head coach of the West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate football team, won’t have to worry about attracting any pre-season district title talk from anyone. And that suits the veteran head coach just fine entering the 2014 season. He would just as soon enter the season under the radar screen, so to speak. The Wolverines graduated 10 seniors from last year’s squad that went 10-2 and advanced into the second round of the Eight-Man playoffs and were second and 6-1 in District 2. The Wolverines return four lettermen in senior end Jack Fehr (183), senior offensive lineman Carson Wirtz (239), junior running back Nolan Grimm (175) and junior running back Travis Fehr (150). Wolverine girls ready for Twin Lakes Conference

John Johnson, new head coach of the West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate volleyball team, says the Wolverines are looking forward to competing in the Twin Lakes Conference this fall. Johnson inherits a squad that compiled a 17-11 overall record in 2013, including 4-1 and runner-up in the now disbanded Corn Belt Conference. Of the four players who were chosen all-conference last year, only one returns in senior hitter Rachel Wirtz, who led the team in kills at the net last year with 137.Subscribe to the Humboldt Independent for both print and electronic editions of the Independent.

Wildcats expect to challenge in new football district

Class 3A District 2 will present plenty of challenges for the Humboldt High football team this season, but Humboldt veteran head coach Greg Thomas and his staff are excited about the opportunity in front of the Wildcats as they begin their 2014 season this week. Thomas and the Wildcats return 14 lettermen from last year’s squad that went 6-4 and finished 3-3 and fourth in rugged 3A District 2. Bolstered by the return of a talented 18-member senior class and an influx of talent from the junior and sophomore classes, Humboldt shouldn’t have any trouble competing in a new district this fall which includes Algona, Webster City, Carroll, Boone, Perry and Greene County.See complete story in the Humboldt Independent.
