Humboldt advances 6 wrestlers to district tournament

Humboldt will send six wrestlers into a Class 2A District wrestling tournament at Webster City on Saturday, Feb. 14, after hosting a 2A Sectional tournament on Feb. 7. Humboldt scored 204 points to finish third in the sectional team scoring. Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon won the team title with 223.5 points and Webster City was runner-up with 220. Greene County was fourth at 153, followed by Southeast Valley with 128.5 and East Sac County with 28.Humboldt's Austen Gargano (1st at 126), Levi Sawyer (2nd at 106), Malcolm Boyd (2nd at 152), Mike Madsen (2nd at 160), Adam Mickelson (1st at 182) and Cordes Olthoff (2nd at 220) advance into district competition which will determine entries for the state tournament in Des Moines Feb. 19-21.See complete story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper. Humboldt's post-season pairings set

Humboldt's winter sports teams have their post-season tournament schedule in place. The Humboldt Wildcat wrestling team will host a Class 2A Sectional Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 7, starting at 12 noon. The first and second-place finishers at each weight advance to a district at Webster City on Feb. 14. In addition, the first and second-place finishers in the team scoring will compete in a regional dual on Feb. 10 in Humboldt.Humboldt's girls' basketball team will draw a first round by in Class 4A regional tournament play and then host a regional semifinal round game on Saturday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m. against either Spencer or Fort Dodge who meet in a first round contest. A regional final is set for Tuesday, Feb. 24 in Cherokee against Sioux City Bishop Heelan, LeMars or Storm Lake. LeMars and Storm Lake meet in a first round game with Heelan hosting the winner in a regional semifinal.Humboldt's varsity boys' basketball team will open Class 3A district tournament play on Monday, Feb.

Gargano presented prestigious Master Editor/Publisher Award

Jim Gargano, Publisher of Humboldt Newspapers, received the prestigious 2015 Master Editor-Publisher Award at the annual Iowa Newspaper Association Convention and Trade Show on Friday night, Feb. 6, in Des Moines. Gargano has been a newspaper publisher since 1979, when he owned and operated the Belmond Independent. In 1985, he purchased the Humboldt Independent and continues in his role as Publisher of the Humboldt Independent, Humboldt Reminder and Humboldt NOW magazine. He is pictured with his wife, Rosie, after receiving the award. Read more in this week's Humboldt Independent.

Humboldt boys clip Clear Lake, girls fall

Humboldt's varsity boys' basketball team pushed their season record to 12-5 overall by clipping Clear Lake, 75-64 Friday night (Feb. 6) in Clear Lake. The Wildcats improved to 9-3 in the North Central Conference.Humboldt's girls fell to the host Lions by a 58-41 final count. Humboldt is now 10-8 overall, 8-5 in the NCC. HHS girls top Lynx, boys fall at buzzer

Humboldt's girls used a big second half effort to rip Webster City, 62-38 Tuesday night in a North Central Conference basketball game in the Humboldt gym. Kessa Kuype scored 19 points to power the Wildcats, 10-7 overall, 8-4 in the NCC.Humboldt's boys, meanwhile, suffered a 66-64 loss to the Lynx. Seth Crouthemel's tip-in just before the buzzer lifted the Lynx. Referees put eight tenths of a second back on the clock but a 30-foot shot by Jaxon Heinz of Humboldt bounced off the front of the rim as the game ended. Compensation Board recommends across the board raises

The Humboldt County Compensation Board met last Thursday and heard from county elected officials about their jobs. The board then reviewed information from other counties and debated the merits of wage increases and appropriate amounts for each position. After some discussion, the board elected to recommend 7 percent wage increases for both the Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger and Humboldt County Attorney Jon Beaty. After some discussion, the board decided that Humboldt County Auditor Peggy Rice should be reimbursed for her extra hours as the county’s commissioner of elections. The board recommended a 5 percent wage increase for Rice. The board decided on 3 percent raises for Humboldt County Treasurer Jana Bratland and Humboldt County Recorder Diane Amundson, as well as all five county supervisors, Carl Mattes, Jerry Haverly, Rick Pedersen, John “Mort” Christianson and Harlan Hansen.

Community Chorus concert is this weekend

The Humboldt Community Chorus will present “Sing A Song” Feb. 6-8 at the R. Wesley Carlson Auditorium at Humboldt High School. Show times are 7 p.m. on Feb. 6, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Feb. 7, and 2 p.m. on Feb. 8. The Big Band will play one-half hour before each show. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 18. Tickets are available at V & S Variety in downtown Humboldt or from any Chorus member.
