Humboldt is Home Base Iowa county

Humboldt County was one of five counties recognized Friday, March 6, by Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad as being the latest to becoming certified as a Home Base Iowa Community. The governor also recognized the counties of Clay, Carroll, Hancock and Webster, along with educational institutions Iowa Central Community College, Mercy College of Health Sciences and Eastern Iowa Community College as being Home Base Iowa Certified Higher Academic Military Partners (CHAMPs). To become a certified Home Base Iowa Community, Humboldt County has to signify that 10 percent of its businesses with the potential to hire new employees sign on as a Home Base Iowa Business, that local government supports the effort, that signage will be established that identifies the community as a Home Base Iowa Community, and that the local community creates local incentives that offer additional benefits for veterans that compliment the Home Base Iowa Act.

Ersland, Purdue send 8 wrestlers to nationals

Ersland, a Humboldt native in his first year as head coach of the Boilermakers, told the Independent on Monday he's pleased with the way his squad has bought into his philosophy and approach. Purdue is coming off last weekend's Big Ten Conference tournament where the Boilermakers placed 10th in the team scoring but will send eight wrestlers to the NCAA nationals Mar. 19-21 in St. Louis.See full story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper. COOK OF THE WEEK - ST. PATRICK'S DAY RECIPES

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. Many people dress in green and think everything Irish for a day on St. Patrick’s Day. The Shamrock called the “seamroy” by the Celts, was a sacred plant in Ireland symbolizing the rebirth of spring. By the 17th century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. I read somewhere recently that here in America we also think of the shamrock as emerging into spring, which does come at a time when spring is also soon to arrive. There are probably as many myths as there are truths about St. Patrick’s Day. Each year, thousands of Irish Americans gather with their loved ones on St. Pat’s Day to share a “traditional” meal of corned beef and cabbage. Although cabbage has been an Irish food for a long, long time, corned beef only began to be associated with St. Patrick’s Day at the turn of the 19th century.
