Burnett resigns as city administrator

Humboldt City Administrator Aaron Burnett announced Tuesday that he will be leaving the position next month to take a similar job with the city of Keokuk. According to a copyrighted story in the Keokuk Daily Gate, the Keokuk City Council held a brief closed session meeting Monday and elected to offer the city administrator position to Aaron Burnett of Humboldt. Burnett was hired as Humboldt’s city administrator in early December of 2010. According to the Keokuk newspaper, the city council approved a $110,000 salary plus benefits for Burnett. Burnett’s current salary for the city is approximately $73,860 per year. He also receives a $50 per month cellular phone expense allowance and $250 per month in mileage expense allowance. Keokuk is a city of 10,780 residents in extreme southeast Iowa in Lee County. Keokuk City Council members said they were impressed with Burnett.

Wildcat girls win another NCC title, boys 2nd

Humboldt's girls won their sixth North Central Conference cross country title out of the last seven years while the HHS boys placed 2nd in the meet held Oct. 13 in Fort Dodge. The Wildcat girls totaled 40 points to run past runner-up St. Edmond which had 83. Humboldt's boys were second to Clear Lake. See full story and photos in the Independent.

Wildcat volleyball team stays unbeaten in NCC

Humboldt kept its perfect record intact in the North Central Conference (6-0) by sweeping Clear Lake in three sets Thursday night (Oct. 8) at Clear Lake. Humboldt won by scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-12. Humboldt also swept Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in 3 sets on Oct. 6, 25-15, 25-11 and 25-18. Humboldt also went 3-1 in the Mason City tournament on Saturday, Oct. 10, and swept Bishop Garrigan of Algona at home on Oct. 13. The Wildcats are 25-3 overall and visit Grimes on Oct. 20 for a triangular with DCG and Boone.See full story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper. COOK OF THE WEEK - SANDRA MENNEN

Sandra Mennen is the Bank Iowa employee being highlighted this week. Sandra is a Certified Financial Planner at Bank Iowa. She and her husband, Kel, have lived in the Humboldt area since 1999. Kel is self-employed. Sandra grew up in Dumont. Kel grew up in Allison. They met on a blind date and went bowling with his church group. That must have been a blind date that went well since they ended up a married couple! They have one child, Kelly, living in Grinnell, and two grandchildren, Isaac and Greta. Sandra and Kel attend the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. “The best part of working at Bank Iowa is helping people make financial decisions that can impact them, not only now, but will affect their future as well. Sandra sees the future of Bank Iowa and the Humboldt community to be very bright.” “People here in Humboldt care about each other and have a lot of community pride,” Sandra said. Sandra and her husband agree on their favorite hobby of fishing.

Lynx down Humboldt, 20-6

No. 3 ranked and unbeaten Webster City scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to hold off Humboldt, 20-6 in Webster City on Oct. 9 in Class 3A District 2 football. Humboldt is now 2-5 overall, 2-3 in district action. The Wildcats host Forest City in non-district play on Oct. 16. See full story in the Independent.
