Humboldt keeps playoff hopes alive with 14-0 victory over Greene County

The Humboldt Wildcat football team kept its playoff hopes alive by shutting out Greene County, 14-0 Friday night (Oct. 2) at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt. Kyle McBeth scored on a four-yard run in the second quarter and Drew Thomas passed 21 yards to Mason Wickett for a fourth quarter score to lift Humboldt, now 2-4 overall, 2-2 in Class 3A District 2.The Wildcats have three games remaining this season. They'll visit district leader and unbeaten Webster City Friday (Oct. 9) and host Forest City in non-district play on Oct. 16. Wildcat volleyball team to host 3A regional opener

The No. 11 ranked Humboldt volleyball team will host a Class 3A first round regional tournament match later this month.The Wildcats will face Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in a first round match in Humboldt on Monday, Oct. 26, 7 p.m. The winner of the match will advance to a regional semifinal round matchup with the winner facing the survivor of the Gilbert/Roland-Story first round match. The regional semifinal will be in Clarion on Oct. 29. A regional final is set for Nov. 4 in Clarion.The other half of the regional has No. 7 ranked Forest City hosting Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and No. 14 ranked Algona hosting Clear Lake with the regional semifinal in Forest City on Oct. 29.Look for updates in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper. New postmaster named for Humboldt Post Office

Jennifer Vitzthum has been named Postmaster at the Humboldt Post Office. The appointment was effective Saturday, Sept. 19. She takes over for Daryle Zwiefel who retired earlier this year. An Armstrong native and 1988 graduate of Armstrong-Ringsted High School, she obtained a degree in computer drafting and design from Iowa Lakes Community College. She moved to Humboldt after she was hired by The Chantland Company where she worked for 10 years. In May of 2000, she started with the U.S. Postal Service as a PTF (part-time flex) clerk/carrier at the Clarion Post Office. New doctors coming to Humboldt

After a lengthy search process, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) and UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine – Humboldt have announced the hiring of two new physicians in the community. The pair is Drs. Ryan and Megan Wood, a husband and wife who have been practicing in Florida and were interested in a more rural setting. Dr. Ryan Wood is a primary care physician. Dr. Megan Wood specializes in internal medicine, endocrinology and holistic care. The Woods have a young family and are looking for housing in the area. “Their contracts are signed and are in the mail. We are very pleased with their decision to join our team and look forward to their arrival sometime in July or August 2016,” HCMH Chief Executive Officer Michelle Sleiter said. Look forward to a feature article on the Woods in an upcoming issue of The Humboldt Independent. The HCMH Board of Trustees also approved work on a facility master plan at their meeting this past Monday.
