COOK OF THE WEEK - EASTER RECIPES

Easter is this Sunday. We celebrate Easter many different ways. Children celebrate Easter by visiting the Easter Bunny and going on Easter egg hunts, finding many treasurers and many receiving a big Easter basket full of fun goodies and candies on Easter morning. In fact, for several years when I lived in Des Moines, I was the Easter Bunny. My church and I rented the outfit from the Theatrical Shop in West Des Moines and our junior high youth group had an Easter egg hunt for the smaller children of the church (who would have been trampled by the bigger and older kids in the bigger city Easter egg hunts.) This is when we prayed for a cold day before Easter. Those furry outfits are mighty warm! Incidentally, since I had the outfit rented anyway, I made use of it and also went out and visited the Children’s Convalescent Home in Johnston and also the children in the hospitals. Needless to say I had as much fun as the children!

County law enforcement contracts discussed

After an hour of debate, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors budged only slightly on their insistence for a two-year 28E agreement for county law enforcement coverage between the county and its member communities. Last December, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved a 28E agreement that will allow the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department to provide law enforcement coverage to the county’s towns without such coverage for a fee of $10 per capita for the first year of the contract. The two-year contract calls for a 5 percent increase in charges beginning July 1, 2017. The board agreed to strike language related to the enforcement of city ordinances. Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger told the board and local town officials at its Monday meeting that enforcement will continue on the same level it has, before the per capita charge was instituted.

More than 185,000 meals packaged

Gargantuan, “of immense size, extent or quantity; of exceedingly great scope or nature,” as in a gargantuan effort: that’s an apt description of what took place last Friday and Saturday at the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Over 900 local volunteers packed more than 185,000 meals for the hungry, all part of the Meals from the Heartland meal-raising effort coordinated by the Humboldt County Ministerial Association and the Team 4 Hungry Committee which works and supervises to make sure the assembly line production process works to a tee. Former Meals Executive Director David Bradley said Humboldt is the largest event outside of a statewide meal raising in Des Moines. Find out why in this week's issue.
