Wildcat girls to 11-1 in NCC

The No. 6 ranked Humboldt softball team got back on the right track Monday (June 27) with an easy 10-2 victory over the Clear Lake Lions.
Ellie Jacobson pitched seven innings of four-hit ball with no walks and struck out three. Humboldt, now 23-5 overall on the season, kept its first-place position in the North Central Conference standings at 11-1 entering the final week of the regular season.
Humboldt clubbed 13 hits in the contest with Beth Duffield leading the way by going 4-for-5 at bat. Olivia Birdsell (double), Kelsey Peters and Rachel Darling each had two hits for Humboldt, which used a seven-run fifth inning to take command of the game.

Wildcat boys rally past Lions, 5-3

The Humboldt High baseball team rallied for a 5-3 victory at Clear Lake tonight (June 27) in North Central Conference action. Humboldt improved to 15-7 overall, 10-0 and first in the NCC. The Wildcats return home to host North Union on Tuesday, June 28.

Wildcat baseball blanks Algona, 7-0

Chris Witzke fanned 16 batters and allowed just three hits to power the Humboldt High baseball team past Algona, 7-0 on June 24th in Humboldt. The victory kept Humboldt unbeaten in the North Central Conference at 9-0. The Wildcats improved to 13-6 on the season. The Wildcats backed Witzke with 13 hits and error-free defense.

Humboldt returns to action at Clear Lake on Monday, June 27.

Wildcat girls in 10-0 shutout over Bishop Garrigan

The No. 6 ranked Humboldt High softball team moved its season record to 21-2 overall by blanking Bishop Garrigan of Algona, 10-0 with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday night in Humboldt. The Wildcats play Boone and Chariton on June 24th in Boone and also play two games in the Pella Christian tournament on Saturday, June 25.

Tickets on sale for Gotch World Championship Tournament

Tickets are on sale for the Frank Gotch World Catch Wrestling Tournament to be held on Sunday, July 3, at the Humboldt High School gymnasium starting at 9:30 a.m.
Tickets cost $6 each for adults, $3 for ages 10-18. Children under age 10 are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the Humboldt Independent Newspaper office located at 512 Sumner Avenue, downtown Humboldt.
Catch wrestlers and fans from across the nation will converge on Humboldt for what is shaping up as one of the most historic catch-as-catch-can wrestling events held in the United States in nearly 100 years. There will be 20 competing in the men's division and four in the women's division. The event is being held under the Catch Wrestling Alliance (CWA) headquartered in Los Angeles.

Senior Citizen Center in city's future?

The Humboldt-Dakota City Senior Citizens Center on 1st Avenue South could be turned over to the city in the not too distant future, it was reported at Monday’s Humboldt City Council meeting. Humboldt Independent photo.

The Humboldt Senior Citizen Center at 67 1st Ave. S. in Humboldt could be operated by the city at some point in the future. That was one of topics of discussion at Monday’s Humboldt City Council meeting.
Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken said he recently had a discussion with one of the members of the Senior Citizens Center Board. The member related that membership in the organization is declining, and it is sometimes difficult to gather enough board members for meetings, and difficult to recruit new members to serve on the board.
The building has been operated for a number of years as a meeting place for area senior citizens, where they gather for cards, social activities and luncheon events over the years.
The building and property is city-owned. A 40-year lease with the senior citizen group expires in November 2023.
