Coach Kap set to lead Wolverine football in final season

The 2016 high school football season will be the last for West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate veteran head football coach Pete Kapustynski.
Known locally as “coach Kap,” Kapustynski greeted nine lettermen when pre-season practice began recently. The Wolverines have eight seniors back from last year’s squad that went 6-5 overall and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the eight-player state playoffs.
“It has been a tremendous ride at West Bend-Mallard the last 24 years. I know I’m going to miss those kids, but I have to do what I have to do. I’ll move on and they’ll move on without me,” Kapustynski said.
“We have been working real hard in pre-season practice, shuffling people around and trying to find the right fit where they belong and benefit the team the most,” Kapustynski said.

Schnetzer set for final year running at Wartburg

Colton Schnetzer

If Colton Schnetzer can stay injury-free this fall, there’s no telling what the former Humboldt High School athlete can accomplish this season.
Schnetzer, a 2013 graduate of HHS, begins his fourth year on the Wartburg College men’s cross country team with high hopes. Last year Schnetzer had ankle surgery during the summer, which hampered his 2015 season.
“Last year I only averaged 14 miles for the summer. I still somehow managed a PR (personal record) later in the season, so hopefully this year will be even better for me,” Schnetzer said.
“I’ve been averaging 55 to 60 miles per week over this past summer. It has been hectic for me to keep that up and maintain a summer job and do some personal life things…but you have to get that foundation and base in place so you can have a successful season,” Schnetzer said.

COOK OF THE WEEK - ST. MARY TEACHERS

Pictured (l to r): Sara Bruening, Linda Daggy, Michelle Havlik, Suzanne Shaner, Pam Tecklenburg, Anna Tecklenburg, Michelle George, Kristyn Mueller, Amy Gotto, Sarah McCullough, Katie Phillips, Mel Dettmann, Kelly Howard, Cindy Edge, Amy Gibson, Diane Dix, Lizbeth Lopez, Melissa Caquelin. Submitted photo.

Last spring, soon after I had interviewed the first graders in Mrs. Amy Gotto’s class, she contacted me to ask if I would like to have the teachers (as a group) be the cook of the week article just before school started. I thought that was a wonderful idea. So we put it on the calendar and when they had their first in-service this past week, they all brought recipes.
Thanks again to Mrs. Gotto for thinking of the Cook of the Week and for another job well done! Anyone can call me anytime with ideas. They are always appreciated! Thank you to Mrs. Edge, Principal, for writing the summary of the school.
St. Mary School in Humboldt operates as part of the educational system of the Catholic Diocese of Sioux City. St. Mary School was first opened by St. Mary Parish in 1920, with grades 1 through 10 staffed by four sisters of the Presentation from Dubuque. The school expanded one grade a year to reach 12 grades. The high school was later discontinued in 1942.

City discusses plans for Eagle Ridge Park

Members of the public were invited to come out to a green space area in the Eagle Ridge Addition late in the afternoon on Aug. 10, to discuss what they would like to see in a community park in the location. The meeting involved city leaders and was just an informal meeting to get thoughts and generate ideas. Humboldt Independent photo.

Fostered by a need for a city park/play area on the west side of Highway 169, north of the high school/middle school, the Humboldt City Council and the Park Board are developing plans for a new park in an undeveloped lot in the newly constructed Eagle Ridge development on the city’s southwest side.
The park would not only serve children and parents in the new addition, but also neighborhood families in the Elmhurst and Blackbird Additions. Of course, as a city park, the area would be open to any members of the public who would want to use the facility.
On Aug. 10, an informal discussion session was held in the area where the park will be located. About one dozen interested citizens attended and offered a number of amenities they would like to see in a city park. People who have suggestions may contact Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken at Humboldt City Hall (515) 332-3435.

Humboldt Fareway makes plans for new location

This piece of real estate on Highway 3 in Humboldt could be the future site of a new Humboldt Fareway grocery store. It is located west of the Lee Smith State Farm Insurance Agency on the south side of the highway. Humboldt Independent photo.

Fareway Stores, Inc. has property under contract in Humboldt, two blocks west of the intersection at Highway 169 and Highway 3, in order to construct a new store to replace the existing location at 710 First Ave. N.
Fareway is working in coordination with the current property owner and local officials, with necessary documents being prepared to be presented at a public meeting in the near future.
Fareway intends to construct an approximately 19,000 square foot Fareway grocery store. When opened, the new store will provide increased options for consumers, while continuing to offer an unmatched, full-service meat department; farm-fresh produce; low, competitive prices and the highest level of customer service that area residents have come to expect from Fareway.

Clark named co-offensive coordinator at Illinois State

DAN CLARK

Dan Clark’s climb up the coaching ladder continues.
Clark, a Livermore native who begins his fourth season as an assistant coach on the Illinois State University football team, has taken on a new role as co-offensive coordinator of the Redbirds.
Clark, who will continue to coach the offensive line and serve as running game coordinator, will work alongside assistant Billy Dicken, who will also coach the quarterbacks.
Head coach Brock Spack made the announcement in late June after the departure of assistant Kurt Beathard for family reasons.
“I’m excited for the new opportunity. I’m happy coach Spack gave coach Dicken and I the co-coordinator role,” Clark said. “He stayed within the staff and elevated one of his assistants to wide receivers and coach Dicken will coach quarterbacks. I’ll stay with the offensive line. It’s exciting that we don’t have to re-invent the wheel. He didn’t go outside the family to find a coordinator.”

Larson paying his dues at Iowa State

BRYAN LARSON

There probably isn’t anybody on the Iowa State University football depth chart who appreciates his journey more than Humboldt’s Bryan Larson.
Larson, a 2013 Humboldt High School graduate, is starting his fourth year with the Cyclone program after earning a spot on the team as a regular walk-on. Today, Larson, who is still a non-scholarship player, is listed as the No. 2 man at right offensive guard.
“When I was coming out of high school, I decided after going through the recruiting process with smaller schools that I wanted to take on a bigger challenge and play at a Division I-A school,” Larson said. “I had my mind made up even before I made the team as a walk-on. I came here with the full intention of making the team at the tryout.”
“Being a walk-on is a positive because you have to work so much harder. Everything means so much to you. It’s a blessing to me that I can be here,” Larson said.
