COOK OF THE WEEK - LINDA WHITTLESEY

I keep running into this week’s cook of the week at church gatherings and finally I have her doing our Cook of the Week! I first met Linda Whittlesey when Our Saviours Church held their annual Heritage Bazaar and asked to do the Cook of the Week. I met lots of good cooks and even got to watch them prepare some delicious ethnic Norwegian and Danish baked goods. Just a month or so ago, Linda and her husband, Kirk, were at the Methodist Church waiting to go in for their annual turkey supper. I had another perfect chance and this time we made connections.

Correction of information

In the Thursday, Oct. 20 Humboldt Independent, the lead story in the Humboldt County Sheriff's report (page 7A) contained incorrect information. One of the subjects involved in the incident, Doug Prime, 49, of Dakota City, should have been identified as Doug Prime Jr. Mr. Prime was charged with simple assault. The reason Mr. Prime was transferred to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital was not disclosed, contrary to what was stated. Mr. Prime posted bail and was not released on his own recognizance as stated. Also, Logan Prime's pickup truck received damage to the box of the truck, not to the windshield as stated in the news article. The windshield was not broken. The Humboldt Independent strives for accuracy in its reporting and apologizes for these factual errors and any inferences made from the inaccuracies.

Dakota City Council purchases property

Second graders from Mr. Gotto’s class at Taft Elementary School were among the 80-plus visitors last Thursday at Dakota City Hall. Students had a chance to see all of the city’s equipment, see the city recycling center and participate in a mock council meeting, with students serving as the mayor, council members and concerned citizens. The Dakota City Council approved several items of business at its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
The city of Dakota City approved a resolution for the purchase of property described as lot 9, block 22, city of Dakota City (202 4th St. S.) from Brian and Norm Nelson in the amount of $15,500, plus expenses borne by the buyer.
The city had earlier agreed to purchase the Duane Watts home at 204 4th St. S. in the amount of $5,500.
Purchase of the property will allow the city more staging area for its planned new city well construction. Also, one of the homes may be rehabilitated and resold to a private party as part of the city’s low-to-moderate income set-aside for housing suitable for low-to-moderate income homeowners.
City Clerk Angelique Berry reported that the city has spent $23,040 in low-to-moderate housing set-aside, with $161,260 in the account.

Animal protection and control act passes

By Kent Thompson
Humboldt pet owners beware, beginning March 1, 2017, all dogs and cats residing in the city of Humboldt must be registered annually at Humboldt City Hall.
That was one of the effects of a revised animal control ordinance passed by the Humboldt City Council on third and final reading Monday night.
Upon registration and receipt of veterinary records confirming a current rabies vaccination, pet owners will be issued a license tag. The cost is $10 for sexed animals and $5 for non-sexed animals. The tag must be affixed to the animal’s collar at all times.
A pet owner found in violation of the registration could be assessed a civil fine.
The other change in the existing animal protection and control ordinance is the definition of a “potentially dangerous dog,” as any dog that exhibits signs of aggression towards humans or pets without provocation. The change eliminates breed specifics in regard to potentially dangerous dogs.
