Vought ends VB career in nationals

Kaitlynn Vought ended her volleyball career competing at the highest level and accumulated a lifetime of memories in the process.
Vought, a 2013 Humboldt High School graduate, closed out her collegiate career when her Southern Nazarene University squad lost to top-ranked and eventual national champion Concordia-St. Paul in the NCAA Div. II nationals on Dec. 1 in St. Paul, MN.
The Crimson Storm fell in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-12. SNU, seeded No. 8 in the central region bracket of play, ended its season with an overall record of 20-11.
The 6-foot-1 Vought played in all three sets and finished with one kill, four digs and three blocking assists.
For Vought, who graduates from SNU in May with a degree in exercise science and a minor in chemistry, it marks an end of a long commitment to volleyball.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet that my volleyball career is over, to be honest,” Vought told the Independent earlier this week.

HMS students and staff 'Back the Blue'

Students and staff showed their support to local law enforcement last week as part of a “Back the Blue” project.
On Tuesday, Dec. 13, Humboldt Middle School invited law enforcement officers in for a “Lunch of Gratitude.” Invitations were sent to the Humboldt County Law Enforcement Center for all of their personnel to join the students and staff during the lunch waves. A total of 20 law enforcement personnel joined the students for lunch.
The event was the idea of teacher Carolyn Kunert.
“With all of the recent events going on in our country, Humboldt Middle School decided that we wanted to show support to the law enforcement officers in our community," Kunert said.
The event was such a success, the school is looking at making the assembly a monthly event.

Mayor wants police chief for Humboldt

By Kent Thompson
Humboldt Mayor Dan Scholl said he favors the city hiring its own police chief.
It is not certain if his view is shared by members of the Humboldt City Council, but the group agreed to investigate the matter further, prior to the upcoming budget discussions for fiscal year 2017-18.
“I feel that under the current circumstances…with the additional duties and responsibilities placed on the sheriff, and the fact that we have a city department run by a county official, I think it’s important to have that discussion (of hiring our own police chief),” Scholl said.
“I believe it is important to have an individual who is responsible solely to the city and not have divided work interests,” the Humboldt mayor said.

CHRISTMAS RECIPES

Christmas is one of the busiest celebrations of the Christian population of the world. But because Christmas has become so commercialized, Christmas is celebrated by many countries around the world, and not just by the Christians in those countries.
Along with caroling and praying, FEASTING has become one American tradition that many of us should probably slow down on but it is just commonplace to have everyone bring and share all the goodies (usually sweet and sugary) they make during the holidays, therefore causing a bit of “over-eating” this time of year. Then comes January and New Year’s resolutions. It is almost a safe bet that many will make at least one resolution to lose weight over the New Year. Of course many soon forget that they even made this resolution!
