HUMBOLDT – Humboldt head football coach Greg Thomas has come full circle – when it comes to the Iowa Shrine All-Star Football game.
Thomas, who has been part of the classic in the past, as a player and assistant coach, will serve as head coach of the North squad for the 45th annual game, to be played Saturday, July 29, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls starting at 4 p.m.
Thomas, who just completed his 17th season as Humboldt’s head coach, which includes a state championship in 2006, called his selection “a huge honor.” He was selected by the Iowa High School Coaches Association.
“Being named head coach of the North Shrine team is a huge honor. Just to have a chance to be associated with that game means a great deal to me. We try to talk to our players a lot about giving of themselves for others (being a great teammate), this is exactly what the Shrine is all about,” Thomas said.

Humboldt honored for coding activities

Kindergarten students from Mease Elementary were fascinated by the Dot and Dash robot learning toys they worked with last Friday during the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Hour of Code activities at the school. Students programed robots to move, make sounds, flash colors and respond to other commands. Humboldt Independent photo.

Providing a learning opportunity with an eye toward the future was the theme last Friday as more than 400 Humboldt students and teachers participated in the “Hour of Code,” teaching and learning computer science skills with applications to vocations that may be years down the road.
There was no child who was too young to experience a little about what technology has in store for open minds.
The exercise in Humboldt was aided by a $3,500 technology award offered by the Iowa Governor’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer and Mathematics) Advisory Council, with support from NewBoCo in Cedar Rapids, and funding support from Google and Verizon.
