When the high school cross country season ended three months ago, Humboldt High senior Ryan Courtney felt inside he wasn’t ready to hang up the spikes.
Turns out now he’ll need those shoes after all when he joins the Simpson College cross country team next August. On Monday, Courtney signed a national letter of intent to run for the NCAA Div. III Simpson Storm in Indianola. Courtney will also be a member of the men’s indoor and outdoor track teams.

After 43 years serving persons with disabilities in the Humboldt County Community, West Fork Services closed its doors for the last time Saturday, Jan. 14, with LifeWorks of Fort Dodge providing the same home and community-based services, along with some different options in the greater Humboldt region.
“This is not a merger or acquisition. West Fork is ending its community and residential services and we are starting our services in the Humboldt area,” Teresa Naughton, executive director of LifeWorks told The Independent.
LifeWorks was founded in 1965 and began offering services in June of 1966. It has a more than 50-year record being a certified provider of home and community based services. The agency is CARF accredited in community and employment services and accredited to provide supported community living.

There will be plenty of dirt flying on four different sites owned by the Humboldt Community School District in 2017 – but it will be in the name of progress.
In last week’s regular monthly meeting of the Humboldt School Board on Jan. 18, Humboldt School Superintendent Greg Darling updated the board on construction projects slated to take place this year.
Ground breaking is expected to take place in the spring for the new Kiddie Cats Community Day Care center, which will be built on the north end of the Mease administrative building in Dakota City.
Ground breaking will also take place this year on the addition and renovation project at Taft Elementary School in Humboldt. Additional classroom space will be built in the center, open area at Taft, east of the north-south center wing.
