Ersland exudes patience at Purdue

Humboldt native and Purdue University head wrestling coach Tony Ersland (right) gives instructions from the sidelines. Ersland is in his third year leading the Boilermaker program.

By Phil Monson
The key word for Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland is patience.
Ersland, a 1992 Humboldt High School graduate and former University of Iowa wrestler, has had to rely on patience as he enters his third year leading the Boilermaker program.
Purdue entered the Christmas break with a 5-2 dual record, 0-1 in Big Ten Conference action. Their only losses came to No. 15 ranked Stanford (23-15) and to No. 3 Iowa (34-3).
“I just have to be patient,” Ersland told the Independent last week.
“So far this season has been a bit of a roller coaster ride,” Ersland said. “Probably more than I would have liked. We have some new faces in the lineup and sometimes with youth, there is some inconsistency. That’s how I feel about our season so far.”
“We’ve had some really good wins over ranked individuals and then we have had some surprising losses in my mind as well,” Ersland said. “Really, it has been a mixed bag.”

Dresser’s No. 6 Hokies poised for a strong run

Humboldt native Kevin Dresser is in his 11th season as head coach of the Virginia Tech University wrestling team. Dresser has guided the Hokies into a top 10 program.

By Phil Monson
Humboldt native Kevin Dresser, now in his 11th season as head coach of the Virginia Tech University wrestling team, is clearly focused on the end result.
In an interview with the Independent during winter break, Dresser made it clear he wasn’t about to hand out any awards on his team’s performance early on – but he likes what he sees in the practice room and on the mat and he’s excited on what his No. 6 ranked Hokies can accomplish in the next 11 weeks.
“I think we have been performing average so far after the first one-third of the season,” Dresser said. “Our goal coming in wasn’t to be great right away. We are figuring some things out with guys who haven’t been in the lineup before and some guys who have.”

Larson focused on final season at Iowa State

BRYAN LARSON

By Phil Monson
As a regular walk-on, non-scholarship player on a division 1-A football team, Humboldt’s Bryan Larson has endured the most difficult path on the Iowa State University football team.
Lots of players have come and gone since Larson arrived on campus in August of 2013 and took part in a workout for non-preferred walk-ons on the first day of school.
Larson’s goal of playing major college football hasn’t wavered and the 6-foot-4, 285-pounder is excited about returning for his fifth and final season at ISU in 2017.
“I have moved forward and made progress every year since I have been here so I really think this year the experience I have will allow me to break through and get a lot more playing time,” Larson said.
Larson saw action in a reserve role in the first seven games of the 2016 season at right offensive guard and special teams, before going down with a hamstring injury in the Cyclones’ loss at Texas on Oct. 15.

Kuyper now on varsity squad at NWC

KESSA KUYPER

Kessa Kuyper has moved up to the varsity squad at Northwestern College.
Kuyper, a 2015 Humboldt High School graduate, is now a sophomore at the NAIA Div. II school in Orange City, IA, and a second-year member of the Red Raider women’s basketball team.
The 5-foot-8 Kuyper plays the big guard/small forward positions for Northwestern, which was 9-5 overall, 3-5 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference as of this writing.
“School is going really awesome. My grades are doing really good and basketball is where I expected it to be coming into the program,” Kuyper said.

“Last year coach told me I would probably be on the JV team again for my sophomore year. This year he ended up putting me on the varsity squad, which is more than I expected,” Kuyper said.
